We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sara Rossi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sara below.
Sara, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
I developed my self esteem by starting small in my career. I asked a lot of questions and got a lot of good teachers on set. I accepted my mistakes and always worked on changing my inner dialogue and negative self talk , that is still a work in progress for me….meditation really helps.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
After working as an assistant director for 20+ years I founded Film Support along with my partner Julie. Film Support is a women owned production service company with headquarters in Costa Rica, providing production services in Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and … worldwide. We are a women-owned and run business and we offer production services for TV commercials, features, reality tv shows, short and long-form content, documentaries and photographic stills. Perhaps one of the most personally rewarding and exciting things of my career is that it requires me to wear many hats, embrace my creativity and express myself. I have the freedom to showcase my organizational skills and my vision for the world to see. By telling stories through the camera I get to see everything that goes on while pre production and filming are happening because I am a part of every big and small decision on set. I’m motivated by the challenge of making a film, a commercial or a reality tv show that people will enjoy watching.
We manage the logistics for the entire production, keep the cast and crew happy while overseeing budgets and quality control. We make everything run smoothly, on time and on the money. We can have a lot on our plate, but it’s our job to ensure each project stays withing the budget and its timely and fun. Every project is a new adventure and its fantastic to be part of its full creation.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities needed for this job are WORK ETHIC and PUNCTUALITY (during production, work days can be as long as 16 or 18 hours. This can be tough and requires a lot of stamina and passion), ORGANIZATION and CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING
I love the novelty of each project and the ability to travel to exciting locations all over the world while doing such a fascinating job! Every project I work on is an entirely new story and vision which means I constantly need to come up with fresh ideas and ways to make them happen.
I also think it is very exciting to be able to collaborate and get the creative juices flowing with other amazing creatives, all with the same goal of making something to be proud of. Filming is a collaborative job and being able to connect with different types of creative people as I witness the work of directors, costume designers, scriptwriters, actors, make-up artists and so much more, its is truly remarkable each time. When you are able to connect and work with all these roles and personality types it is a very engaging and interesting work life.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I will be forever thankful to Victor Vega, a film director in Costa Rica that trusted me and my skills so much by handing me a really big film production with multiple units and a very big responsibility at a very young age and allowed me to build my self esteem, my courage and my humility to start off with the right foot in this career.
