We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Alagha a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
There was a time when I was fully caught up in the non-stop hustle culture that seems to come with the territory of being a business owner, however I learned about the absolute importance of self-care no matter where you’re at in your business journey. I practice a more balanced approach, making sure I get out into nature, practice mindfulness, keep learning, stay connected with my community, and just let loose with some creative outlets. This switch-up has not only recharged my batteries but has helped my creativity and resilience in dealing with all the twists and turns of running my home fragrance company. I’ve learned the hard way that self-care isn’t just a side note – it’s the cornerstone that keeps success sustainable and makes a real difference, both in my business and in the lives of the people around me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
At Wild Aspen, we are not just a business, but a community of like-minded people who share similar values. We are committed to creating products that not only make you feel good but also do good. Supporting local artisans, using eco-friendly packaging, and donating a portion of our profits to charitable causes are all important to us. As we continue to scale and enter another year in business, we are excited to partner with an environmental organization that will plant trees with every purchase made through us. These projects aim to promote biodiversity through the planting of native and diverse trees. Nothing is more rewarding than to share this positive impact with our customers who embody our values and have been instrumental in supporting Wild Aspen’s mission.
Additionally, we are planning to open a physical location in Northern Colorado to bring the candle bar experience to you. A welcoming and immersive environment where you get the chance to engage with the creative process, learn about the art of scent, and craft your very own signature scents. The experience is an ideal setting where you can bond over the creative process with a date, friends, family and children to create memories together.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three key elements that stand out as true game-changers: resilience, adaptability, and an in-depth understanding of the market. I advise fostering resilience by embracing setbacks as learning opportunities, honing adaptability to navigate evolving landscapes, and immersing oneself in comprehensive product research to anticipate the market and keeping a pulse of what your customers want.
For those starting their journey, my advice is to embrace challenges as opportunities, don’t be afraid to pivot when needed and always stay curious– learn from different people, mentors, stay up to date on industry trends and don’t stop practicing. Embrace the journey and all that business has to offer.
