Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah-Beth Diller. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah-Beth, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Creativity can be challenging to maintain. I’ve experienced spells of writer’s block that have lasted days, weeks, and even months. To pull myself out of those pits, I’ll write short poems about nothing in particular. Or, I’ll write random monologues for characters who don’t even exist… yet. Writing doesn’t always have to be meaningful. Sometimes, it just needs to be productive. Write down the first word that comes to mind, and see where the train of thought takes you. Not everything you write will be a hit, and that’s okay! Just do what you can to avoid getting rusty.
It’s also important to develop a deep appreciation for everything around you. The people, places, nature, and art. As a writer, I make sure to read as often as possible so that I can better appreciate literature. I follow many models on social media for photoshoot ideas, and I also draw inspiration from vintage magazines. Films inspire me in a multitude of ways, especially in terms of writing and acting.
Stay open-minded and enthusiastic. Allowing yourself to be inspired is vital for overcoming stagnation.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hi! I’m Sarah-Beth. I’m a 25-year-old writer, model, actress, and filmmaker based in Houston. My style is influenced by elements of goth, retro, sci-fi, and fantasy. I’m also an avid horror fan, with some of my favorite films being Scream, Ginger Snaps, Hereditary, Jaws, and most recently, Pearl. I’ve always been drawn to things that have traditionally been shunned for being too weird, or too dark. I find incredible beauty in the strange, beauty which I attempt to capture through various forms of media.
In 2020, I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in media arts from Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi. I also minored in theatre. Since moving back to the Houston area, I’ve been establishing myself as a creative. I’ve thrown myself into modeling, which is now one of my greatest passions. I’ve also enjoyed writing poetry and horror, supervising scripts, and voice acting for audiobooks.
I’m always eager to work with fellow creatives. Creating wonderful things with wonderful people fills my heart with purpose. I hope to continue doing what I love, while also branching out into other ventures.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Rip off the band-aid.
It can be tempting to overthink new endeavors, but overthinking will only form a knot of fear in your stomach. For many years, I daydreamed about becoming a model; I could see the photos as clear as day. However, I didn’t take the leap until I was twenty-two. Before then, I had been held back by my body insecurities. I didn’t begin modeling because I woke up one day, and was magically relieved of my insecurities. I simply reached a point where my desire to create triumphed over my desire to hide.
To create is to take risks. Fretting over whether or not you’ll be good at something, before you even attempt said thing, is the definition of self-sabotage. Rip off the band-aid, and take risks for the experiences they provide. Focus on doing the work, and success will find you.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
