We were lucky to catch up with Sarah & Chris Hogenesch recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah & Chris, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Chris and Sarah are both transplants to Los Angeles. We find as adults it can be hard to makes friends and build community. We thought that soccer could be used as a catalyst to building community in Los Angeles. We love the soccer community and how this international sport brings people from all over the city with different exposure and experiences in soccer together. We use out time on and off the field to build community. We host socials, watch parties and enjoy our time playing soccer as well as watching our fellow team members play soccer!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
We started Los Angeles Co Ed Soccer because we love the game of soccer and love the way soccer brings people together. This league is all about having fun, making connections, and good friendly competition. All are welcome to join our league.
So if you are new to soccer or have been playing for years we have a place for you. We can work with indivduals, groups of friends or an entire team to get you a place on our league. There are other leagues out there that are competitive leagues where winning is the most important thing and the main reason people come out and play. This is not what we are about!
Of course we welcome good friendly competition, but the primary function of our league is for people to have fun and make connections.
For this reason, in addition to the games, there will be social mixers and other social events that are designed for people to meet up and get to know their fellow players off the field. Sometimes in our city of Los Angeles everyone is kind of spread out, and making meaningful connections can be challenging. The goal of L.A.C.E.S. is to bring those people together behind the uniting force of soccer!
We hope you all will enjoy the league and all the fun we are about to have!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Chris has an extensive history with playing and loving the game of soccer. Together with Sarah and their combined love of community they collaborated and created Los Angeles CoEd Soccer. The two use their individuals strengths and passions to work together to make the soccer league what it is today. They always hold space for others to share their ideas to help make LACES feel like a community.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We would love to collaborate with other soccer communities in the LA area. We are currently working to collaborate with a local non profit to utilize our community to impact homelessness in the LA area. We are happy to work with other organizations to help get the word out about what we are doing to impact a positive outcome in the LA area.
