We recently connected with Sarah Green and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
Pessimism dug deep, ingrained roots in my soul as a young girl. As the fifth of six girls from a broken family, I easily felt unheard and only gleaned that life was a struggle, sad, or better for others. My thoughts consisted of “this is too much” or “I am too much,” and I claimed “poor me” like it was a proud badge to wear.
Victimhood reared its ugly head in my twenties when depression engulfed my daily ideals, and I could not figure out how to “do” life well. One morning, my sadness hit rock bottom as I sat exasperated, wondering if happiness was real. Were others given an easier life, I asked?
I remember reading someone else’s words, “You can do anything for 15 minutes.” I knew if I didn’t do something, I would be doomed to pessimism and sadness. I had to find answers. Was happiness real? Were people given an easy life? Was I doomed because of my background?
Helen Keller once said, “No pessimist ever discovered the secrets of the stars.” It was that hard place where I began a gratitude journal, started jogging, and connected myself to God. I’d tried these things in the past but quit each time. This time was different because my only commitment was 15 minutes or five if it was a hard day.
Gratitude changed my life. I’ve had a journal for well over twenty years. I’m no longer a pessimist. I’m full of optimism and joy because gratitude has shaped my heart. It’s easy for someone looking from the outside in to assume that optimistic people are born that way. On the contrary, it usually stems from overcoming challenging situations.
I will never return to the pessimistic, depressed state because I will always have my gratitude journal in hand.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My most important work is my 27-year marriage. I’m a mom to six and a Mimi with two daughters-in-law. I treasure these roles more than anything. As a family, we love adventure, the outdoors, and good food.
My website, www.growththroughsmallsteps.com, was born from my struggles with defeat and depression. On my blog and social media sites, I help women close the gap of overwhelming feelings, defeat, and sabotage one baby step at a time.
With the motto, “I can do anything for 15 minutes” and “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength,” I eventually ran marathons, tapping into my athletic strengths that I knew I had as a kid. I got a Theology degree while raising small children, started a small business, and so much more. Small steps are powerful. I’m exploring Substack to go deeper with my subscribers and eventually plan to start a small step coaching business. I’m working on a book about growth through small steps.
I also share a blog and podcast with three of my sisters, Dandelions Potholes & Wrinkles and Sisters on Purpose Podcast.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Gratitude, starting small, and not giving up are key, no matter what you want to do or where you feel called to grow. With God’s help, you can surmount any obstacle and step into any dream if you consistently show gratitude and take baby steps daily. Baby steps allow us to hang in there on hard days because if the only task we have is sending one email, exercising for five minutes, or making one phone call, we can do that. Gratitude helps us look at what’s going right instead of what’s going wrong.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with authors, writers, and creatives working on growing their platforms and building a presence online. The best way to reach me is at growththroughsmallsteps@gmail.com.
