Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Hyde. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always been the sort of person who works really hard – as long as I’m doing something I’m passionate about. After nearly two decades of working for other people in non-profit communications, I realized that I had built up a big skill set and felt ready to try flying solo. Initially, I thought I would start my own freelance communications company, but after doing a 200 hour yoga teacher training, I kept receiving more and more invitations to work in wellness spaces and train in more areas of yoga and energy work, and found that I was enjoying it more than my freelance work. So here I am several years later, with my own wellness business. And the best part is, I get to incorporate all the things I loved about working in marketing and communications, and utilize those skills in running my own business and promoting my own work. I’ve found that not only is it easy for me to work hard doing these things that I absolutely love, sometimes it’s actually hard for me to remember to slow down and take it easy!
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a full-time yoga and meditation teacher with an extensive menu of offerings including hatha, vinyasa, yin and restorative yoga; meditation; breathwork and reiki; sound baths; retreats, workshops and trainings. I am the cofounder of Flourish Meditation, specializing in teacher trainings, workshops and retreats. I teach in several studios in the Seattle Area (MindBodyHum, Dryp Yoga and Drift Yoga & Juice Bar), and offer 1:1 and small group sessions at my private studio on Queen Anne.
I think what makes me unique within the wellness community is my holistic approach, incorporating many different types of movement and breath practices in order to offer clients the perfect blend of practices to support their journey. I do my very best to offer an inclusive and all-levels approach that honors the deep spiritual practices of yoga and transcends a typical gym or fitness class experience.
My passion is meeting people where they are and supporting them in their personal growth, as well as teaching people to listen to their intuition and honor the needs and preferences of their bodies. I always say that moving our bodies should feel good and fun, and that rest should be available to all of us, any time we need it – which is always.
My approach to yoga is that it is a pathway to knowing ourselves better, not just an exercise modality, and that when we reduce it to merely exercise, we miss all the beauty and richness of the spiritual practice of yoga. I also believe that very often, what people need is to soften, not to push themselves harder. It is my honor and privilege to help people rest.
This year, I’ve been deepening my offerings through the addition of energetic practices like breathwork and reiki, and I look forward to opening up more spots for private clients – I’m really enjoying working with people 1:1. I also have several local retreats coming up this year and next, and am really excited to hold space for people seeking a break from their busy lives.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think several things have really helped me as I started my own business (during a pandemic, which I do not recommend). First and foremost, my background in marketing and communications has been essential – there were so many things about marketing myself that I didn’t have to figure out, because I already had the expertise to do them, like build my own website, run my own social media, and just speak comfortably and confidently about my skillset and what I have to offer. Also, I have a lifelong background in both performance and teaching. The years I spent acting, singing, dancing, playing music and speaking on stages gave me confidence, public speaking skills and the ability to shake it off when I “mess up.” Likewise, I’ve taught everything from communications skills to singing and dancing, and teaching comes very naturally to me. I also think having a lot of intuition and empathy has helped me in this line of work – I’m good at listening, and reading people and intuiting what they need from me and how I can support them.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is someone who wants more than an exercise experience – someone who wants to know themselves better and deepen their relationship with themself. It’s a person who wants to move their body, but also values rest. It’s someone who is devoted to their ongoing growth and care. It’s someone who has empathy and love for others, and wants to be their best self in order to best serve others.
