We were lucky to catch up with Sarah May recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I think my purpose found me. I always wanted to be “an artist” but never thought I was “good enough.” I always kept art a part of me and my life but it was not something that I believed served a purpose other than making me happy and complete. Making money from my art was simply a dream that I thought only belonged to others.
However, the idea of art as a part of my day to day life and income would not escape my mind. It was nagging at my soul. I started that path by becoming a public school art teacher. It allowed me to be surrounded by color, creating and creative energy. I loved sharing art and the process of creating and as I was doing so, my own art and purpose continued to evolve.
I have found though that teaching and creating art has been only part of my purpose. Through these two endeavors, I have discovered that my purpose is to support others’ emotional and creative journeys. I am here to share knowledge in order to help others build their purpose and dreams.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am Sarah May, an artist, an educator and animal lover…also a wife, a mom, a daughter, sister and friend. All of these components hold important spaces in my wheel of existence.
Art, Loved Ones and Animals are all essential to me and show up in my art.
I truly cherish sharing knowledge, supporting others journeys and keeping a childlike spirit and wonder. I hope through my art others will feel a tug towards their calling, that they will smile, sense community and want to spread a bit of joy.
I create through various mediums but my main loves are linocut art and illustrating. I enjoy combining traditional printmaking with digital art and putting art out into the world that feels a bit like a visual hug. I see a sticker and card as more than paper products, I see them as simple ways of telling someone they’re important, special and cared about. I hope for my art to encourage following a calling, a passion, a journey.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Imagination, Grit/Perseverance and Belief.
These three actions go together and are essential in your own personal journey. You must stick with what is calling you…you will know because it will keep tugging at you. You have to work through the hard stuff, the failures, the doubts, the imposter syndrome and truly believe that your passions are important and will come to fruition. Your imagination will help guide you, help your believe and propel you forward. Always keep these qualities close.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?
If I knew I only had a decade of life left, I truly think I’d continue doing what I am doing…
Telling people I love them. Traveling. Making and sharing art. Supporting and showing up for people. Being kind to strangers. Encouraging others to go for it (whatever their it may be!). Petting all the cats.
We do not know what the next decade, or even tomorrow, brings so we must chose to live in our most authentic way everyday.
