Sarah , thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
Overall, Covid really taught me a lot about resilience. I was in the process of stepping out on my own in February of 2020. I was very passionate about my work and this had been a long time coming. No one necessarily knew the world was going to come to a complete stop due to the pandemic. I had signed my paper work for my lease at a new loft and was ready to put my two week notice in, and everything stopped. My daughter was in kindergarten at the time and the salon I was working in was closed until further notice. I ended up being out of work for 13 weeks. Everything was up in the air and I didn’t know if it was smart to be stepping out on my own and starting a business during this time. How was I going to support my family when everyone was scared to go out? My family was a great support system and really pushed me to go forward with it all. That was one of the most terrifying things I had done, but you honestly never know what’s on the other side. I opened my business in May of 2020, and I won’t lie, it was a slow year and I questioned a lot. My clients that I had built over the years were so gracious and loyal to the point I was able to succeed. I am now almost 3 years into being out on my own and now have a great partner I get to work with as we continue to grow. Sometimes things don’t always go as planned, but if you continue to push through and bounce back from the downfall, it’s always 10 times more rewarding than staying in a place you cannot grow from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Sarah Powell. I started a business called Beauty and Brows by Sarah back in 2020 focusing on brows and lashes. I have since partnered up with an amazing friend of mine, Stephanie Simmons, and have since rebranded to LUX Brow and Beauty Lounge! I have been in the industry going on 9 years. Our focus is to have our clients leaving feeling their absolute best about themselves! We specialize in regrowing brows and lashes. LUX also offers makeup for special occasions, halloween and events as well. Stephanie and I are working together to add more to our services in hopes to grow bigger and add more people to our name in the near future! We both have daughters who we want to set great examples for as they grow older to be able to maybe get in the same industry. To be able to show our kids that you can in fact do everything you set your mind to do!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Failure is never option. You’ve always got to do what takes to provide for yourself and for yours. The more you put into your craft the greater the outcome will be and your clients will see that. You have to take risks to be able to see that you can succeed, otherwise you will stay stagnant. Who wants to stay the same forever? Everyday you have the chance to grow and learn new things to be better.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents always showed up. They never left me feeling as if I were alone in any situation, no matter what it was. My dad and step mom have been by far the biggest supporters in my journey and have always stood behind me on building the life I want to create for myself and my daughter. They may not like everything I choose to do or how I go about somethings, but they always remember I am my own person as well and I have to make decisions for myself as I’ve grown older. I couldn’t be more grateful to have had that throughout my life and still to this day. It has made a huge impact on me and how I will always show up for my children.
