We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Rincon a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sarah , thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
My optimism is deeply rooted in the resilience and determination I witnessed in my parents’ journey. As immigrants from Colombia, they came to this country with little access to resources and were forced to navigate countless oppressive systems. Despite these challenges, they carried an unwavering commitment to building a meaningful and sustainable life for themselves and our family. Their childhoods were marked by sacrifice both entered the workforce as children, not because they wanted to, but because they had no other choice. They worked tirelessly to support their families, growing up far too quickly in a world that often left little room for rest or ease.
As adults, they continued to embody resilience, taking on various fields of work and throughout time finding ways to open doors for us all. They did this not because they had endless support or guidance, but because of their deep desire to create something sustainable for our family through sheer will and determination. What stands out to me most is that, despite the hardships they endured, they always carried a smile on their faces. They knew that what they were building at the time was not just for them it was for me, for my future, and for opportunities they could never have dreamed of.
I’m constantly humbled by their sacrifices and inspired by their ability to find joy, even in the face of systemic barriers. Their journey is a daily reminder of the privilege I now hold. Because of them, I have the freedom to dream, to choose, and to explore paths that weren’t available to them. Every decision I make is grounded in the values they instilled in me: gratitude for the doors they opened, respect for the struggles they overcame, resourcefulness and a commitment to honor their sacrifices by building a life that reflects their strength and courage.
Their story reminds me that even in the face of incredible challenges, there is always room for hope, growth, and transformation. It’s a testament to how resilience can transcend generations, shaping not just the lives of those who lived it, but also the future of those who come after. My optimism comes from knowing that no matter how difficult the path may seem, the legacy of those who came before us serves as a powerful foundation for what is possible.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
As a queer, first-generation Latina therapist, my work centers on holding space for individuals, couples, and families to navigate the complexities of their stories. I specialize in trauma-focused modalities like EMDR and Brainspotting, and my passion lies in helping clients reconnect with their roots, break free from intergenerational cycles, and come back home to themselves.
What feels most exciting and special about this work is the privilege of witnessing transformation. It’s incredibly powerful to see clients reclaim parts of themselves, honor their lineage, and step into the freedom of breaking cycles that no longer serve them. In my practice, I integrate Internal Family Systems (IFS) with a culturally sensitive lens, weaving together an understanding of ancestral wisdom and nervous system healing. I strive to make therapy a space where clients feel seen not just for their pain, but for their strength and internal wisdom.
At Rincon Curativo, I emphasize accessibility and authenticity. I reserve sliding-scale slots to prioritize the Latine and BIPOC communities, honoring the courage it takes to seek support in systems that often feel inaccessible or stigmatized. I also offer EMDR and Brainspotting intensives, which are designed for clients who want to do deep, focused work over one to three days. These intensives are available both in person and virtually, offering flexibility for clients to choose what works best for them.
Beyond the therapy room, I’m passionate about decolonizing the therapeutic space and creating resources for other therapists navigating this work. I’m currently curating directories for clients seeking witchy or liberation-oriented therapists, ensuring they can find providers aligned with their spiritual practices and belief systems.
What I hope folks take away from my work is this: healing is not linear. Therapy is not about fixing; it’s about reconnecting with yourself, your community, and your roots. You don’t have to navigate the complexities of life alone, and it’s never too late to rewrite the narratives that no longer serve you.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are intuition, curiosity, and determination. Each of these qualities has played a crucial role in how I approach my work and my life, shaping my path in ways that have often felt deeply aligned with who I am at my core.
Intuition and connection to my body have been my guiding lights. I’ve learned to trust the quiet whispers of my inner knowing, the gut feelings and bodily sensations that help me navigate decisions, whether in my personal life or in sessions with clients where I am often making split second decisions. My body has often told me what words or actions are needed before my mind could catch up. For anyone early in their journey, I’d suggest getting comfortable with tuning into your body. Your body holds wisdom that can’t always be captured by words, so find ways to cultivate that connection through grounding practices, mindful movement, or simply pausing to notice what you feel. Trust that your intuition will guide you when you need it most.
Curiosity is what’s driven me to stay open, even in spaces that didn’t always feel aligned with my values. As someone who spent years in academia, I quickly realized that many of these systems often don’t honor ancestral or Indigenous wisdom. They can center on what’s “evidence-based” and leave little room for the rich, lived knowledge that comes from diverse cultural traditions. I became deeply invested in learning from a multitude of perspectives, embracing the wisdom that can be found both within and outside of traditional academic settings. My curiosity has always led me to ask questions internally and externally pushing me to seek out new ways of thinking, exploring different ideas, and questioning systems that don’t serve the fullness of human experience. For those early in their journey, I encourage you to embrace curiosity in all its forms. Don’t limit yourself to what’s “accepted” or conventional—ask questions, explore, and challenge the status quo. There is so much more wisdom to be found in listening deeply, both to yourself and to the world around you.
Determination is what has kept me grounded and moving forward, especially through challenging times. It’s not about pushing through at all costs, but about staying true to my purpose and honoring the sacrifices of those who came before me. My parents, who faced so many barriers, have been a constant source of inspiration. Their resilience reminds me daily of the power of determination, and how it’s not just about reaching the goal, but about staying committed to the journey, no matter how winding or difficult it may be. To anyone beginning their own journey, stay connected to your “why.” Even when the road feels tough, remember why you started, and let that determination guide you forward.
For those early in their journey, I’d say this: listen to your body, follow your curiosity, and stay determined to find your path. These qualities, when nurtured, create the foundation for growth, healing, and a meaningful life—both for you and those you’re meant to serve.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
One book that has profoundly impacted me is Break the Cycle: A Guide to Healing Intergenerational Trauma by Dr. Mariel Buqué. This book felt like a warm invitation to explore the ways we carry the stories, pain, and resilience of those who came before us. Dr. Buqué’s compassionate approach to understanding intergenerational trauma illuminated how much of what we struggle with today—our triggers, patterns, and even self-beliefs—can be traced back to unspoken wounds and legacy burdens passed down through generations. She offers a powerful reminder that healing isn’t just an individual act; it’s a deeply collective process that honors the journeys of our ancestors while creating new paths for future generations.
What resonated most with me was her emphasis on the role of the “cycle breaker.” Breaking cycles is not about rejecting the past or distancing ourselves from our roots. It’s about transforming inherited pain into something new—something rooted in safety, love, and connection. This message reaffirmed my belief in the sacredness of healing work and its power to reimagine what’s possible for ourselves and those we love. Dr. Buqué offers practical and heartfelt tools for addressing trauma, like mindfulness and self-compassion, while weaving in the importance of reconnecting with ancestral wisdom.
Reading this book felt like holding a map for healing that is both deeply personal and universally significant. It’s a guide that reminds us to tend to our wounds with gentleness while recognizing the ways our healing ripples outward. Dr. Buqué’s words serve as a beacon of hope, encouraging all of us to face our stories with courage and create new legacies grounded in wholeness and love. This book has not only shaped the way I approach my work but has also deepened my understanding of what it means to heal in ways that honor both the past and the future.
