Meet Sarah Rowland

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Rowland. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Sarah, you’ve got such an interesting story, but before we jump into that, let’s first talk about a topic near and dear to us – generosity. We think success, happiness and wellbeing depends on authentic generosity and empathy and so we’d love to hear about how you become such a generous person – where do you think your generosity comes from?

Generosity comes to me when I take care of my health and my mind which makes me feel good. I believe this leaves room to pass on my good feelings to others. When I help a person, it makes me feel good, this is another way to take care of my health. This cycle is so simple and beautiful anyone can do it. It does not have to be a huge gesture always. Small things, such as simply listening to someone can make a difference in a person’s day and you may learn something too.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

For 20 years I had my own graphic design business. Now I am a wallpaper and textile designer. I love art and creating something that people can live with such as my wallpaper on their walls! It’s the most amazing feeling when someone loves your design enough to put it in their space.

A lot of my design work is custom. I love working hard to give a unique feeling that conveys the clients wishes but it must be in a way that I can do it. Some jobs are not right for me but when it is, it comes through as something genuine and sincere.

I am currently working with my mother on a line of custom limited edition silk scarves called, Henry & Eve. @_henryandeve_

I also design every year a collection of wallcoverings for Koroseal Interior Products.

I love having a deadline and I need a team of people relying on me to deliver every year.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

1. WORKING HARD: I worked my butt off in college (not so much in high school, I will admit). I paid for my own college. I took a gap year to work and to figure out what I wanted to do with my future and to raise some money. I began to realize that my future was up to me. No one was going to make me do anything. I was the boss of my life. I became very motivated and soon realized that my hard work was benefiting me. People took me seriously. I felt embolden, challenged and responsible. It was a great feeling to have as a young designer. I still feel these feelings now, even after 45 years in my design career.

2. GRADITUDE: I never take anyone or anything for granted. I am a very thankful person. I see how I must earn my relationships and business every day.

3. LISTEN: Being humble and respectful to those who are teaching you or helping you or being your friend. This is the basics of human connection. If you can not be humble and respectful you will make your life harder and sadder than it should be. Live in love and with an open heart.

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?

Procrastination, which can bring on guilt and feelings of freaking out because time is running out. Although I must say I do always get it done.

Sometimes I do not feel creative and excited about a design, so I let it roll around in my head for a while and then it comes. I try not to be too hard on myself because I know this just shuts me down and feelings of stress come on which is not good for anyone. I try to be patient with myself but sometimes I just need to get real and ask for more time from the client. I am not operating on babies after all, it’s just design, right?!
