Meet Sarah Soda

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Soda a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sarah , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.

I’ve struggled with low self-esteem for much of my life and often prayed for confidence. A big turning point came when I created my social media character, Sue Dillon. Through her, I found a safe space to express myself and try on new confidence. It’s definitely a journey, and I still have a ways to go, but I can now walk into a room and express myself—even if I still feel shaky or unsure at times. The difference is that now, instead of shaming myself like I used to, I’m able to sit gently with my feelings and encourage myself through those tough moments. Sue Dillon has helped me learn self-compassion, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.

Creating something fun and unique that I see others love so much makes me feel good. I love what I do and I’m proud of myself for all of the tough decisions and life changes I have made as a result of Sue Dillon and my social media career.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

As a comedic content creator, I perform original prank calls and comedic skits online as my alter-ego, Sue Dillon—a 69-year-old, mullet-wearing, chain-smoking Southern woman with a big personality. People can purchase custom prank calls through my website, suedillon.org, for Sue to perform. I also livestream these prank calls and share other comedic content on my live channels as Sue. I’m available on Cameo for personalized videos, and I occasionally perform stand-up comedy sets, which I also enjoy writing. I love collaborating with fellow content creators to keep things fresh and fun.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities or skills that have been most impactful in my journey are hustle and organization, creative writing, and the ability to find humor in difficult situations. My background as a nurse taught me how to work hard and stay organized, both essential for balancing content creation with other responsibilities. Having a Doctor of Nursing Practice in psychiatric-mental health nursing also gives me a deep understanding of people, which helps me know the boundaries of comedy and keep my material both funny and respectful. My strength in comedy writing is something I’ve developed and proven by getting published, which took months of dedication and creativity. Finally, growing up as the child of an addict taught me how to see humor in hard things—it’s a coping skill that’s become a huge gift.
For anyone early in their journey, my advice is to embrace spontaneity and let go of judgment—of yourself and others. Creative careers are winding journeys, and everything unfolds as it should. Be patient with yourself, stay open to learning, and trust the process

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My biggest area of growth over the past year has been truly embracing my individuality and learning to say no to things that don’t resonate with me. I’ve become much more comfortable with the idea that not everyone will understand or agree with my choices—and that’s okay. I’m learning to trust my instincts and believe that I’m being guided to where I’m meant to be.
