Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarah Stowe. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sarah, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
I’m not sure imposter syndrome ever fully goes away, and I had a supervisor early in my career who said something that really stuck with me: “Imposter syndrome is normal. It might not disappear, but you can choose how you relate to it.” That helped me reframe the experience, not as a sign that I didn’t belong, but as evidence that I cared deeply about doing meaningful work. Instead of waiting to “arrive” or feel completely confident, I started embracing the mindset of being a lifelong learner. I realized it’s okay not to have all the answers as long as I stay curious, open, and committed to growing, I’m exactly where I need to be.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m the founder and owner of Tikvah Counseling, which means “hope” in Hebrew. Our tagline is “Where Hope Meets Healing” and that really captures the heart of what we do. I work as a mental health therapist, and I truly believe I have the best job in the world. Every day, I get to witness transformation and healing. Whether it’s a client learning to be kinder to themselves, setting a boundary for the first time, or simply realizing they’re not alone.
What makes this work special for me is the privilege of walking alongside people in some of their most vulnerable moments and watching them rediscover their own strength. Tikvah Counseling is more than just a business; it’s a space where healing can begin and hope can grow.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three most impactful qualities in my journey have been humility, compassion, and determination.
Humility allowed me to keep learning, stay open to feedback, and recognize that I don’t need to have all the answers to be effective. For those just starting out, I encourage you to stay curious and embrace the learning process.
Compassion has helped me connect with clients in meaningful ways. It starts with being present, listening deeply, and remembering that people need to feel seen and heard more than they need advice.
Determination has been key. This is a challenging field, and there are moments when self-doubt or discouragement show up. The important thing is to keep going. Growth takes time, and every step forward matters.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
My clinical supervisor during my pre-licensure journey had a huge impact on my growth, both professionally and personally. She not only helped me build clinical skills but also taught me the importance of showing compassion to myself the same way I do for my clients. That lesson changed how I show up in the therapy room and how I care for myself outside of it. She also encouraged me to get creative in sessions, to move away from a one-size-fits-all, textbook approach and really tailor each session to what the client needs in that moment. Her guidance gave me the confidence to trust my instincts and to see therapy as both an art and a science.
