Meet Sarah Thompson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sarah Thompson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Sarah, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from two sources. The first was gifted to me from my mother. Growing up I watched her faced with challenges that might topple someone else and yet she met them with grace and even love. What an inspiration! My second teacher of resilience came to me through my time as a professional dancer. That career requires that you are present every day in mind, body and spirit. Each day and each run-through you strive to refine and make your work even better than it was the last time. This is a practice and state of being that stays with me to today.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My partner (in life and in business) and I started Honey Child Pops right after a chance encounter with the ice cream truck. We had just picked up our daughters from school and it seemed like everyone was stopping for an after school treat. We searched the menu board for the least troubling option, but everything on that board was going to bring the same fate. First a sugar rush, followed by a crash. On our walk home we wondered “Why can’t we find frozen treats that are delicious but not full of all that dairy and sugar?” And not only that, but “Why can’t we find frozen treats that are full of more healthful ingredients like superfoods?” And that was how Honey Child Pops was born. We have spent our time since then creating and refining delisious superfood smoothie pops. They are made from whole blended fruit (so the fiber is still in there), and naturally sweetened with a touch of honey or maple syrup if we use any sweetener at all. Some of our pops also include superfoods, plant-based proteins and adaptogens. They are like a fortified smoothie on a stick!!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think 3 crucial ingredients for starting your own business include curiosity, community and a leap of faith. Curiosity leads you to explore, think creatively and experiment. These actions yield an interesting product/idea and set you out on an engaging journey. Community is crucial. When starting a business, there is no way anyone can know everything or have every skill that will be needed. Cultivating a community of connections can help you discover the answers to your questions and provide support along the way. Finally, there are no guarantees in any endeavor. Don’t let fear keep you from starting. Just start!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
We looooove collaboration. We have partnered with local farmers as well as other women and minority-owned businesses to create new products that are meaningful to both parties and carefully showcase the strengths of each of our enterprises. Collaboration brings excitement as we get to talk about our passions and learn about those of our collaborators. If you would like to work with us, please reach out!
