Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sarai Puerta. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sarai , so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
I started working out and reading self-help books. Taking care of my body and my mind had been the best decision ever and I’m able to see that in my art, how confident I am talking to the clients, how long I can be sitting on the chair tattooing, how strong my mind is when it comes to face new challenges. It has impacted a 100% my life, for sure.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Sarai Puerta, I’m a tattoo artist born and raised in Venezuela. I have eight years of experience in the tattoo industry. I define my tattoo style as a mixed technique between cartoons and realism. What I love the most about my job is that it has never felt as a job, it is something that I enjoy doing, plus, I can make people ideas come true on their skin. The stories behind every tattoo makes them special and I’m always grateful to be chosen as their artist. A tattoo is something for life, so what I aim to do is to make the best experience ever for all of my clients. It is not only the art, but also the reminder of what made you come to me, the conversation and the connection that we had, how you felt during that process.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
-Discipline, have the discipline to keep working on yourself, to keep getting better at your art, to study, to learn from the others around you.
-Resilience, every mistake is an opportunity to learn, do not be so hard on yourself, take the good of every situation and be thankful for it.
-Detachment, sometimes we have to let go our own beliefs in order to succeed. I grew up in a conservative family, they taught me that it wasn’t worthy to try to live of art, I needed to let that go and look forward to the future to do what I love.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Self-knowledge and self-love. This past 12 month I learned that I’m the only one who has to prove something to myself. That I’m the only one who has to believe in me, that I have to take care of my body and my mind. I learned to establish boundaries not only with the others but also with myself. It’s definitely been a year of self growth.
