We recently connected with Sasha Smothers and have shared our conversation below.
Sasha , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Growing up, I was bullied and left out of groups. I never had a core group of friends and had to get comfortable being on my own. I did not speak up. In fact, I rarely used my voice to the point that I developed strep throat quite often. My throat chakra was completely out of balance. There was one day in high school when I realized I was different. I wasn’t meant to fit in. From there, I started speaking up. Over the years, I began working on myself and healing my childhood trauma. It wasn’t until I met my husband that it clicked for me. He has helped me realize that we each have infinite worth and infinite value. Inherently, I knew it. He is the one who reminds me each and every day. It’s what we teach our daughter as well. Once you realize that no one is better than you, your confidence and self-esteem will skyrocket.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
What I do for work is not who I am. However, when identifying with my source of income, I am a Realtor in the Metro Denver area. I work with buyers, sellers and investors. Everyone’s journey in real estate is different and so is each transaction. I am very hands on. Whether you have bought and sold a dozen homes, or you are a first time homebuyer, I treat everyone the same. Often times Realtors, especially in Colorado, pass a lot of the responsibility to their assistants once they get their clients under contract. I do not agree with this. I warn my clients that we better like each other because once we go under contract, we will be talking almost every day until we celebrate at the closing table. I go the extra mile to ensure a smooth transaction for my clients and to alleviate stress for them. I have an incredible team and support system behind me to navigate anything that may come our way. At the end of the day, I want people to know that I am not just here for them through the transaction, but I would love a life long friendship!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I am very fortunate for the position that I am in when it comes to my real estate career. For starters, I owe a lot of it to my parents. Considering they have been in the real estate world my entire life, I naturally gravitated towards it. On a daily basis, I was exposed to real estate and was able to learn from my parents. They also provided me the space to ask questions. This allows me to continue to grow my knowledge base at my own pace and through real life experiences. I have witnessed my parents through the highs and lows of the market which taught me perseverance. At the end of the day, regardless of market conditions, there are outside factors that cause the need for someone to buy or sell. Understanding what is happening in the local market provides the advantage for our clients to move forward with confidence. There is always opportunity out there. The question, do you know where to look for it and do you think outside the box?

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My dad has been the most influential person in my life when it comes to my career. He was the 4th person in the state of Massachusetts to open his doors as a mortgage broker almost 40 years ago. People laughed in his face and told him he wasn’t going to make it. Now, he is one of the last men standing and he has done it all through referrals. No marketing, no ads; simply relationships. When I get stuck, he is the first person I call. He has a way to break it down for me and we call it “Sasha language.” The best part is that I always repeat it back to him because the best students are the ones who become teachers. I love when I call him because he gets excited that I am going to learn something new. It is a perspective that I wish more people had when they hit a road block.
