Meet Sathya Chey Patterson

We were lucky to catch up with Sathya Chey Patterson recently and have shared our conversation below.

Sathya , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
When considering a career to pursue, I started with stepping back and assessing what natural skills I felt I had, what I felt the world needed and what I enjoyed doing. Coming from an immigrant background, I knew what it was like to not be financially secure. We came to America with little resources and had to be frugal to survive, so I had habits I learned over my lifetime that formed the basis for the money mindset anyone needs to build wealth. As I observed over my lifetime how stressed people were over money, I combined my joy of helping people with these skills I learned to a purposeful career helping others protect and accumulate their wealth. Together, we work towards creating a life that mirrors the values and aspirations integral to their distinct journey. I feel excited about bringing peace of mind and confidence to this aspect of their lives that will allow them to focus on spending time on the people they love and things they love to do.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
As I alluded to previously, my family immigrated to America from Cambodia. We survived the Cambodian genocide and resided in refugee camps in Thailand for about four years before coming to Long Beach-where the largest population of Cambodians outside of Cambodia lives. Along with my immigrant background, becoming a young single mother and having to raise a child on my own really attributed to my resilience and ability to overcome obstacles. I’m grateful to have built a financially secure life, have a loving husband and family and make a conscious effort to constantly give back to others.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

  1. Authenticity: There are a lot of people that may provide a similar service to you in the world, but no one who has gone through the experiences and education you have that provide your unique perspective. I think staying true to who I am, why my upbringing has given me a passion for helping others financially – has set me apart from my peers.
  2. Being a Go-Giver: The Go-Giver Book by Bob Burg and John David Mann shares a great story of how the path to success is to give. I have made an effort to contribute my time and money to charities but also making connections between people, mentoring or gifting my time and advice if it helpful.
  3. Being open minded to improving or doing things differently: While we don’t want to constantly criticize ourselves, being open minded to new technology, processes or efficiencies should be considered. I am always looking at how others in my industry are investing, practice management and growth tips that could help me be a better advisor to my clients.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
My parents showed me the importance of consciously spending. A lot of the financial issues most people face – credit card debt or not being able to save is not always due to not making enough money, but because of mindless, frivolous spending that causes you to spend more than you make. Because we were not wealthy, every dollar spent required us to assess whether it was necessary to our well-being or future financial growth.
