We recently connected with Satin Marche and have shared our conversation below.
Satin, so great to have you on the platform and excited to have you share your wisdom with our community today. Communication skills often play a powerful role in our ability to be effective and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your communication skills.
I developed my ability to communicate effectively through observing the people around me lack the ability to do so. In observing their shortcomings, I learned that I not only lacked the ability to communicate effectively, but it is also a form of giving my power away when I choose to yell or not use my voice at all. I used to always come off strong and my energy was always felt before I ever said anything. Through this, I learned that words DO hurt. The more I matured, the more I was able to harness my personal power; communication and my communication style. To this day, I am still learning the art of communication and active listening. I don’t typically “code switch”, but everyone is different and at the end of the day, if someone is not ready to receive something, it doesn’t matter how I say it. My words will always feel like a threat. I am learning balance and that is what matters most to me. I was born on Wednesday. Wednesday is ruled by Mercury, which is the planet of communication and intellect. In coming into a constant awareness about myself and where / who I come from, this has helped me develop effective communication.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
As the founder of Sacred Melanin (Ancient Interiors), I am a Green Interior Decorator and Designer, Ra Sekhi Kemetic Practitioner, Essential Oil Specialist, Womb Yoga Dance Practitioner, Womb Wellness Facilitator and Fertility Strategist helping womben (women) harmonize their well-being through personal styling + shopping & organizing. Immediately after finishing my Green Interior Decorating and Design program, I thought that I would dive head first into designing homes. When I began to assess the needs of my community and the needs of womben (women) in general, I realized there was a need for harmony, balance, and order. To me, decorating homes is a luxury service, so it was important for me to hone in on needs over novelty, yet still have a balance of both within my offerings. I then positioned myself to leverage my background in Fashion and Green Design in order to truly be of service. What I feel is most special about what I do is that I am pioneering in this space, as there are not many Melanated womben (women) who are unifying a multitude of professions as I am in a sustainable way. The integration of such professions have led me to create The Harmonize Your Well-Being course – a 21-day immersive journey that serves to guide you through a myriad of holistic healing modalities deriving from African Kemetic spirituality.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I would say that communication, organization, and balance were the three qualities about myself that were most impactful in my journey. Though I can’t say that I have mastered any of these areas, all of these qualities have always been a part of my journey. Advice that I have for folks who are early in their journey who are developing and improving these qualities– When it comes to communication, I prefer to write out the things I have to say before I say it. I have written many letters and notes expressing my disposition in many situations. Sometimes I have given the letter to the person, other times I have read directly from my notes to ensure that I am emotionally intelligent in my expression and not overcome with emotions of fear. Organization is something I actively do everyday. I believe that everything is energy, so when I sense a presence of energy that feels heavy, or I notice that the energy is stagnant and less abundance is flowing, I then begin to shapeshift the atmosphere by organizing. Not just my home, but my email inbox, photos in my phone, and I have also set my messages in my phone to delete after 30 days, along with other miscellaneous acts. Balance is an ever changing and ever present principal. Just remember you have the tools to bring yourself back to center; Ma’at. You may never master any of these, but remember to take everything one day at a time. A little goes a long way and the best thing you can do is to do it… gracefully.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was not coddle me. Because of them, I am adaptable, resilient and I have the ability to transform my circumstances. I have beat many odds & I will continue to do so every. single. time. Being a witness to who they are, as I am an extension and perfect mix of them, it reconfirms my belief that we choose our parents. I give much thanks and appreciation for my mother and father, both.
