Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Savannah Russell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Savannah, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
For many the concept of self-care conjures images of a calming bath, a restorative massage, or the indulgence of high-quality dark chocolate. While these occasional treats can be a delightful part of self-care, I’ve learned through my journey that true self-care encompasses much more. It’s about the daily choices we make to nurture our health and happiness, laying a foundation that supports us in every aspect of our lives.
I believe that the foundation of self-care includes getting an adequate amount of sleep, prioritizing healthy food options, proper hydration, getting regular exercise, setting boundaries, and having some sort of routine for your mental health, whether that is journaling, meditating, therapy, or other outlets. These elements form the bedrock of self-care. By focusing on these fundamental practices, we ensure that our self-care routine is built on a solid foundation.
With a strong foundation in place, we can then layer in additional self-care practices that cater to our individual needs and preferences. For me, this includes therapeutic treatments like acupuncture and massage, as well as engaging in activities that bring me joy and fulfillment, such as cycling, gardening, or losing myself in a good book. The beauty of self-care is that it’s deeply personal. What works for one person may not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay. The key is to find what brings you joy and make it a part of your routine.
When we view self-care as an integral part of life, it no longer feels like a chore or an extra item on our to-do list. Instead, it becomes a series of intentional choices that enhance our well-being throughout the day. This shift in perspective has been transformative for me, leading to significant improvements in both my personal and professional life. I am more relaxed, energetic, and sociable, while also being more productive and effective in my role as a healthcare provider and small business owner.
The impact of self-care extends far beyond our individual lives. By taking care of ourselves, we’re better equipped to care for others and contribute positively to our communities. It’s a virtuous cycle that starts with a commitment to our own well-being.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I have been a licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist for 9 years and a small business owner for almost 2 years. I discovered acupuncture while I was taking a Wilderness First Responder certification course and a classmate began to have an asthma attack. Her inhaler was mistakenly left in the car at the trailhead so one of my other classmates, who was an acupuncturist, stepped in to do some acupressure on her back and neck. Her asthma attack went away within seconds. That very night, driven by curiosity and awe, I found myself researching acupuncture schools. Fast forward 14 years and I am more in love with this medicine than ever.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers a comprehensive healthcare system, focusing on treating the individual as a whole. When someone comes in, I am going to get to know them, their health history, and everything I can about their chief complaint. This extensive insight is crucial for identifying the root cause of their symptoms. Treating symptoms alone may offer temporary relief, but understanding and addressing the underlying issues provides lasting change.
My specialties are digestive wellness, mental health, women’s health, as well as acute and chronic pain. The beauty of TCM lies in its holistic approach – recognizing the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit. It’s not uncommon for a patient seeking relief from neck and shoulder pain to discover an emotional root causing their physical symptoms. This revelation often leads to more effective and holistic healing.
One aspect of my practice I cherish most is the opportunity to educate. I believe in equipping my patients with a personalized “toolbox” of knowledge and techniques they can carry with them for life. This toolbox might include stress reduction strategies, dietary advice, or specific exercises – all tailored to their unique needs. My goal is for each individual to leave feeling empowered, with the tools and understanding to take an active role in their health and well being.
In addition to educating patients in person, I also post regularly on social media sharing my knowledge of TCM and providing insights and tips to help everyone feel their best.
My journey into the world of TCM has been one of continuous learning and passion. As a practitioner, there is nothing more rewarding than seeing my patients discover the power of this medicine and take control of their health.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a small business owner, the journey to success is not just about the strategies and decisions we make professionally but also how we manage our personal growth and well-being. Learning to set boundaries, fostering a sense of curiosity, and practicing acknowledgment have been pivotal in my journey, offering lessons that can benefit many of us navigating the complexities of life and business.
For too long, I found myself saying yes to every request and demand, personally and professionally, fearing that setting boundaries would be perceived as a lack of enthusiasm or capability. This led to burnout and a realization that without clear boundaries, both my personal well-being and my business could not thrive. Setting firm yet respectful boundaries transformed my life. It allowed me to be more present in my relationships and contributed significantly to the steady growth of my business. Boundaries are not restrictions but rather affirmations of self-respect.
Curiosity plays a crucial role in personal and professional development. It encourages us to ask questions, seek understanding, and explore new possibilities. Embracing a curious mindset has led me to uncover efficient solutions and gain deeper insights into my behavior and business practices. Curiosity is the tool that keeps us engaged, innovative, and continuously learning.
Running a business is a rollercoaster of highs and lows. It’s easy to dwell on the challenges, but acknowledging and celebrating the victories, no matter how small, can significantly impact our mindset and motivation. I’ve learned the importance of recognizing my achievements and the value I bring to my clients. This practice of acknowledgment helps combat negative self-talk and reframe my perspective, reminding me of my capabilities and accomplishments.
In our pursuit of personal and professional fulfillment, it’s vital to acknowledge a fundamental truth: none of us are perfect. This realization isn’t a concession to defeat but rather an invitation to embrace the beauty of our imperfections. Every day presents a new opportunity for growth, learning, and progress. The journey towards self-improvement and success isn’t linear; it’s fraught with challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. Yet, it’s in these moments that we discover our resilience, adaptability, and the strength to persevere.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
As an avid reader, numerous books have significantly contributed to my personal and professional growth. Among them, Get Rich, Lucky Bitch by Denise Duffield-Thomas stands out. This book offers an engaging exploration of financial self-awareness, presenting clear, actionable steps to overcome personal money blocks. Duffield-Thomas’ accessible writing style and practical advice have been instrumental in shifting my mindset towards attracting abundance in all facets of life.
Another cornerstone in my library is Atomic Habits by James Clear. This book delves into the profound impact of small, daily habits on long-term success. Clear’s insights into how these habits compound over time have reshaped my approach to self-care, emphasizing the importance of consistent, positive habits in fostering health and happiness.
Together, these books have not only enriched my knowledge but also empowered me to make meaningful changes in my life. Their lessons on financial empowerment and the power of habit have been invaluable in my journey towards personal development.
