Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Clark. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity is the driving force of my life. I have one of those marquee light bulb signs at home, it’s the word, CREATE. Giving birth to new ideas is what adds new and exciting dimensions to our lives and the world at large. Creativity keeps everything fresh, providing new perspectives, opening new world views. And it’s something we are all born with, that we embrace innately as children, that unfortunately gets lost for many people as they ‘mature’ into the ‘real world’.
I personally keep creativity alive in many ways. I am a songwriter and musician. I transform my inputs from the world – from street signs I read, to conversations I hear, to feelings I experience – into melodies and rhythms, which I vocalize and translate into music through various instruments (in my case, guitar, bass, keys, and drums). Then I try to craft poetic lyrics that tell universal stories, paint vivid pictures, and elicit real emotions. I am blessed in that this comes very naturally to me, often and without effort. My obligation to this gift is to honor the creative sparks, pursue them as far as I can, and share them with the world.
In my business life, being an entrepreneur and club owner requires creativity on so many levels. From the basics of interior and exterior design, to marketing, website, social content, live events, business models, community building… My wife (and business partner) and I have meetings dedicated to brainstorming new ideas or new approaches to challenges we face. We push ourselves to think beyond what we’ve seen or known before, searching for new ‘aha moments’ that can drive us forward.
As the father of a 6 yr old girl, creativity is required if I want to play, engage and bond with her. Thinking up games, obstacle courses, places to go, people to see… Doing puzzles, coloring books, board and card games… All these activities not only force creative thinking, they make or break how we are perceived by children. Are we fun? Are we relatable? Are we on their level? When we tap our creativity, we earn trust, we become close, and we end up mutually fulfilled with the time we spend together.
Ultimately, I don’t keep creativity alive. Creativity keeps ME alive… 🙂
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Today I am co-founder and general manager of Club Joyful in Venice CA. My wife, Erika, and I started the club in Sept 2023 after we each had our own separate but overlapping spirtual/energetic awakenings/experiences. We got clear on our passions, our callings, and our desire to build a new business together that provided us – and our community – with a much needed family oriented “3rd place” for enrichment, entertainment, and healing, in a way that was fun, accessible, and full of joy.
Club Joyful is a social club and wellness center that provides adults, kids and families with activities, classes, workshops, events, and group + personal energy healing. Consider it a new age social club with community events, live music entertainment, outdoor recreation, a yoga, breathwork and sound healing studio, and so much more. A place to build community, to hang out after drop off, after pick up, and after bed time.
I am also a songwriter, producer and musician with my own home recording studio – ScottyGoldMusic. I lead a band called, The Keep Going with our self titled debut album out earlier this year, available on all streaming platforms. I run the music program at Club Joyful and am currently putting together a house band, while working collaboratively with the amazing healer-musicians who perform at the club. I run musician meetups, songwriting mentorship, and aim to run showcase events for local musicians and ‘weekend warriors’ who have normie jobs by day and rockstar ambitions at night 😉
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1 – Confidence and convinction in our thoughts and ideas, knowing that we are supported by friends, family and forces unseen when we’re in pursuit of our passions that serve the highest good for ourselves and our community
2 – Openness and a sense of innocence and discovery – a willingness and desire to learn from others and not make snap judgements exclusively from personal experiences and points of view.
3 – Patience and trust in the process, knowing that things don’t always move or happen when and how you want them to, but keeping the faith, staying true to self with a strong work ethic, making the best moves and decisions you can with the information you have in front of you.
My advice for others? — Iisten to your heart, to your instincts, to your gut… but don’t do so blindly in a vaccum. You have to listen, to seek counsel, to ask for help… and be willing to be flexible and open minded in pursuit of your dream and vision. There’s a difference between being confident and cocky, decisive and stubborn. There are signs all around us to help keep us on the path, best to see and listen with eyes and ears open.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
As we launch Club Joyful and fill our programming calendar, we are definitely looking to partner and collaborate with all kinds of folks. Practitioners, therapists, healers, energy workers — we have amazing rooms where you can see clients, host events, and build a conscious community together. We are looking for instructors, counselors, teachers who can run kids club events and classes like art, music, dance, etc. We could use help in creating, editing and posting content… In running all aspects of events, from small private birthday parties to club ragers with 200 people. I want to collaborate with local musicians who can be available in both a house band, but also for social and special events on nights and weekends. And we’d love to partner with mindful brand sponsors who want to share their products and services with our community, who want to support and embrace family wellness and high vibe sensibilities.
