Meet Scott DeHuff

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott DeHuff. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Scott, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
Inspiration surrounds us everywhere we go. We just have to open the door and allow it to come in. Sounds a bit silly, but it’s true. Allow your friends and family to be a part of your creativity. When you see something that sparks an idea, let them know, and let them be a witness to your idea becoming a work of art. Or maybe the idea doesn’t amount to much. That’s okay. Let them see/hear/feel why the idea won’t work. You talking out loud, and working through an idea will help them understand the process, and it will help you mold the creativity in your mind. Also, talk to people about what you do. Get feedback. You might not agree with what everyone has to say, but it may spark an idea that may lead you down a path to greatness.
If I’m ever having trouble dipping into the creative pool in my mind, I reluctantly set my phone or other devices down. While those are a constant stream of information, they tend to stifle the creative juices from flowing in my mind. Then, I take a step back from whatever I’m doing – take a deep breath – then allow my mind to go blank. This allows me to center my thoughts.
Also, you can’t be afraid to take risks. To quote Bruce Arians, “No risk it, no biscuit”.And finally, be you. Know that you are the talent that people are here for, and embrace it, and be humbled by it.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m the host of a Colorado based podcast. My main focus when producing an episode, is to make people laugh. Why? Because life is hard! We all need time to escape from our realities, and allow our minds to feel a sense of calming created by laughter. I’m trying to sound smart when I write this.
Listen, when you tune into the DeHuff Uncensored podcast, you will laugh. Unless, you don’t have a sense of humor. That’s on you, not me.
I love hearing from my listeners that tell me I help them through their tough days at work, stressful times at home, and even fighting cancer.
We all need to smile, we all need to laugh, and we need to stop letting negativity dominate.
I spent over 18 years in sports/news talk radio, I know fear sells. I don’t like that. We need to try and focus on being happy.
Side note: I say a lot of bad words in my pod. What?! I’m honest and true to myself.
Check me out on social media – @dehuffpodcast.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Technical skills are must, but it doesn’t mean you have to be an expert. You just have to be willing to learn and adapt to the constantly changing technical landscape. I’ve always been willing to pick the brain of others that are smarter than me, and learn from them. Having a knowledge of how everything works in what you do, is key to maximizing your potential.

Connecting with my listeners/customers. Before getting into the media, I worked in grocery stores and restaurants. This transitioned into what I do now. Understanding that you must serve your best product at all times. And listen to the consumer for their needs, and make sure they know that you hear them.

Honesty is one of my biggest qualities. Good or bad, you know I’m sharing my raw thoughts. The last thing you want to be is something you’re not. You may find success, but eventually the truth will come out. Don’t be a fraud. Be you.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Social media is tricky beast to tame at times. I would post snippets from my show, but never in consistency. Sometimes I’d find success, but a lot of times I wouldn’t. So I did some digging, and I found the ideal times to post on each platform – FYI, each social media platform has higher engagement at different times of the day.
Then I setup a daily and weekly social media plan. Each day, I post in specific way. By doing this, I have seen a dramatic increase in social stats.
Social media is free advertising. I started focusing hard on social media in February of this year. February and March were record breaking months in downloads for the podcast. April is trending in the same direction. I credit that all to tightening up my socials.
