Meet Scott Hyland

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scott Hyland a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Scott, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
Firstly, through the prioritization of accountability. Spending nearly 13 years in corporate America, I experienced the antithesis of good leadership and accountability. By seeing first-hand how poor leadership and lack of personal accountability can undermine a business, I learned how to apply self-discipline to every aspect of my personal and professional life to ensure that I’m always doing everything in my control to deliver positive outcomes regardless of external factors. I also trained and competed as a Golden Gloves boxer in my younger years, and there is no sport or activity on the planet that teaches and requires self-discipline more than boxing.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I own Paw Academy Pet Care, one of the Orlando area’s largest and longest-running Pet Care companies. Paw Academy’s mission is to ensure that every pet has a happy and loving home, and we do our part to meet that mission by providing best-in-class care to our clients’ pets when the humans are away or unable to care for the pets themselves. Our team of pet-loving professionals offers drop-in visits, overnight stays, and basic training reinforcement. We serve the communities of Celebration, Championsgate, Golden Oak and Reunion as well as the Disney resorts and select other pet-friendly resorts in the Disney area. We currently serve over 950 fur families and counting. We believe that pets are an equal part of any family, and our team has a blast spoiling fur babies all day every day. Our favorite part of what we do (besides getting to hang out with awesome dogs and cats) is delivering peace of mind to our clients who may have been apprehensive in the past about leaving their pets alone to travel, go to work, or visit the parks.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Accountability, indomitability, and communication. In a society that increasingly lacks in the value of personal accountability, maintaining this mindset will provide a major advantage. Persevering through adversity and through people around you expressing doubt is another important factor. I’d recommend being very stubborn in the pursuit of something if you know it’s the right thing. And lastly, communication is more important than any other skill. Being able to effectively communicate with clients, staff, coworkers, investors, etc is vital.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Managing growth. As we continue to grow into new communities and partner with new resorts, scaling our service has been a challenge. The logistics of finding new staff and adding new clients in our new areas has been difficult. The best thing we can do to try and overcome the challenge is to keep applying our best practices as we grow. As more people find out about our amazing service, we hope more people will want to join our team as well!
