Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Scott Knapp. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Scott, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
My self-discipline comes from the thought of helping my future self out. This mindset helps me stay focused and saves time later on. For example, when preparing a meal, cleaning up at the end can be overwhelming. If you let dishes stack up throughout the day and try to get to it later, you’ll end up having to do dishes for a very long time. If you optimize your time, and clean as you go, you’ll be able to chill out after you eat because you have way less to worry about. I carry this mindset at work as well. I try to keep my files named properly and organized, use workflows that are repeatable, and make tools that will help me complete tasks more efficiently in the future. I try to use my time wisely and get tasks done efficiently so I’m not overwhelmed later on. Procrastination can increase stress and anxiety, and it can be very difficult to find motivation to do things at times, but having the discipline to push through these hard times will pay off later for sure.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m an artist who has been fortunate to work on some really amazing film and video games. I love helping bring stories to life and push myself creatively. It is so rewarding to see someone enjoying a movie or game that you’ve worked on and my hope is that something I do helps inspire someone else to pursue what they love as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
- Be dependable. You want to be someone others can count on to do things properly and in a timely manner.
- Be passionate. Passion for a project shows in the work you do, and also spreads to other people on your team and helps motivate those around you.
- Always grow. You never want to get to a point where you feel like you know everything. There is always more to learn, and ways for you to become a better employee and person. Whether it’s a new software or technique, or dealing with other people, you always have areas to improve.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed, taking a quick break if possible is very helpful. I love going on a quick walk and being out in nature if possible to help ground myself. I believe being outside helps give perspective on how small a lot of problems actually are. Believe in yourself and your ability to overcome obstacles in life. Thinking about how fortunate we all are to be alive and grateful for the awesome things in our lives can help give perspective.
