We were lucky to catch up with Scott Kress recently and have shared our conversation below.
Scott, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
It honestly took me a while to find. I remember being in highschool and having no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I started making YouTube videos, which were horrible, but I still had fun making them. Fast forward a few years, TikTok came out and I remember downloading it thinking that I could use it to help promote my YouTube channel. One of my first few TikTok’s ended up going viral, so I sort of sidelined Youtube at the time, and started posting a lot on TikTok. I still didn’t know my purpose at this time, but was just having fun posting. After doing that for a while, I started to get messages and DMS from people saying how they watch my videos after a hard day, or that I’m able to make them smile when they’re sad, etc. I think that helped me discover my purpose. While I do just post videos for fun, it makes me feel like I have more of a purpose knowing that I have the ability to make someone’s day even a little bit better.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I create content on Social Media! My primary focus is TikTok, but I also post regularly on YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat. I also recently started to take up an interest in acting. I did a few improv classes that I enjoyed and am now taking a regular acting class. Being a content creator has honestly been one of the most exciting things. I love that I can entertain and make people laugh for a living!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience for sure! It took me so long before I saw any sort of success doing social media. I was posting on YouTube pretty consistently for a few years before getting TikTok, which was when I started to do well. Consistency too, during those years when I was posting on YouTube I was posting quite frequently even when my videos were not doing well. If I wasn’t consistent I don’t think I would be where I’m at now. And then honestly I think just my personality in general! For me I find it a lot easier to be patient and consistent when I’m not wrapped in the future, or the outcome I want, but when I just enjoy where I’m at.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Being very supportive of everything I did. I did gymnastics when I was younger and they were very supportive of that. Then somewhere along the line, I had an animal phase where I wanted to be a vet and ended up basically having a zoo in my room. Then when I started creating content, while I don’t think they really understood exactly what it was I was doing, they still supported me. After about a year of doing social media, I decided to move to LA, which definitely helped me get to where I am now, and I think that would have been a lot harder to do if I knew my parents didn’t support it.
