We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Scott Peat a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Scott, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
It comes from watching my parents work hard. My mom and dad always said if you want to make it in life you have to take the steps to get there even when there is a wall in front of you. I never understood the wall part of their saying but in time I learned that that wall is yourself. Even on the day where you dont’ feel like working or moving forward it is important to do one thing each day that is considered productive.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in Elkhart, Indiana. My first breakout role was an episode of NYPD Blue, where I guest starred across from Dennis Franz as a closeted Marine who would rather confess to murder than out himself. Since then, I have landed roles on TV shows such as Monk, CSI, NCIS, Pitch, Young Sheldon, Shameless, Baskets, Westworld, Criminal Minds, and most recently Tyler Perry’s All The Queen’s Men. In film I have been lucky enough to be in Transformers, Dead Season, To Leslie, and Walter Hill’s 2022 western, Dead for a Dollar. I also enjoy writing, producing and I direct my own films and web series, such as Resurgent and Thanks For Coming In. Thanks For Coming In can be found on YouTube if you search my name. It is honestly one of my favorite projects that I put forward.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I would say that you need to allow yourself to have a bad day. Don’t pretend everything in life is wonderful, if you’re feeling down on a certain day, live in that moment and figure out how you’re going to dig yourself out of this hole, or mental block you are experiencing.
Do something everyday that you enjoy, play guitar, go out and hike, call a friend, don’t text them, actually get on the phone old world style and reach out and feel that human contact.
Turn off your phone in the morning, you don’t need it, it does nothing for you to first wake up and look at social media.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Finding self worth to be honest. After the SAG actor strike work has pretty much dried up. I was making a okay living with guest star work on television. But the strike took the wind out of a lot of our sails. So I trie and meditate each day and focus on what I can do and how I can get there. I have three daughters and each day I think about how I can make them smile and what I can do to help them.
