Meet Sean Dowdell

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean Dowdell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean below.

Sean, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Many times I found myself as the only person that remotely looks like me. Especially in the 1990’s and early 2000’s being fully tattooed was not mainstream or accepted quite like it is today.
When I was able to get into a higher end conversation or business meeting I found myself being looked down upon very quickly. It was easy to know who underestimated me in a given conversation just from body language or the insincerity of their tone or questions.
I usually ended up finding this to be an advantage overtime as the ones who treated me like this, were taken off guard when I could in fact; have a high level conversation pertaining to business analytics, marketing strategies or customer experience.
It ended up being very useful tool for myself and my company.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I own and operate a company called Club Tattoo that I founded in 1995 in Tempe Arizona. Currently we have three studios in Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Arizona; as well as three Studios in Las Vegas at the Venetian, Grand Canal Shoppes, Planet Hollywood, Miracle Mile Shops, and the Linq Hotel casino. This is a high-end business model that features find jewelry such as gold pot, jewelry including diamond genuine stones.

I also own another luxury brand of Tattoo & Piercing Studios called INKED located in New York City and Miami Beach, and we are currently expanding.

I have three patents in the industry and I’ve written two books that have been published globally titled Tattooed Millionaire and Brand Renegades.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. My ability to be underestimated and over deliver on the expectations of others.

2. My willingness to out work everyone around me, including my competitors.

3. My thought process on making sure that I was trying to create something unique or great rather than chasing a financial reward for what I was doing. So much so, that even at times I would operate at a loss just to create something special.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?

I have several books not just one that I’ve been very instrumental and my business growth.
One. At the shrugged, this book really gave me a different understanding of work ethic and the ability to create. To stand on your own merit and to make sure that when you’re creating something that the most important person to satisfy yourself first

2. Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins was a game changer for me. Definitely helped me understand that most of the challenges I faced were internal/mental, and that I could overcome them if I focused and was willing to work through them by creating strategies and through massive determined actions.

3. Rich Dad Poor Dad, as simple as this book was the ability to stand at your perspective on things can genuinely change not the way you think about them the way you take action to improve any given situation.
