We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean Green. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean below.
Sean, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
As someone who first worked in writing and comedy, I am no stranger to putting myself out there. Those lessons learned pitching and doing standup have helped me as I launched a podcast and eventually an entire sports and betting content creation company.
Nothing can take the steam out of a great set like a joke or bit that bombs. The silence is deafening. At that moment, time stands still, and you’re second-guessing every decision you’ve ever made. But if you linger in that moment, you’re sunk. Your only choice is to keep on fighting and keep on moving. You have to believe in yourself and your material to make it happen. You have to take that risk and keep putting yourself out there repeatedly.
In launching a podcast and, eventually, a podcast company, I had to trust my co-host and partner, Ryan Kramer, and the staff that we began to build around us. In the startup space, you have to get used to taking risks. There have been countless times when we have pushed the chips into the center of the table and taken a chance, whether with launching podcasts, taking a chance on a hungry but unproven talent, or betting on our ability to land big-time partnerships.
At every turn, I learned how to read the moment, assess the risk, and ultimately, bet on myself and my team around me. When you have talented and passionate people in your corner, any bet or risk you make on yourself gets much easier.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
The Sports Gambling Podcast Network is an underdog story. Like so many podcasts, it started with two friends who were passionate about something. In this case, my co-founder and partner in crime Ryan Kramer and I bonded through a mutual love of sports and sports gambling. After a while talking about it, we thought that other people might like to listen as well. So we set up shop in the garage, and away we went.
More than a decade later, we are one of the last independent sports and betting content companies. We are not a subsidiary of some multi-national conglomerate or the content arm of a corporate gambling operation. We are 100% independent and free to our listeners and readers. Degen Nation, our readers, and listeners, are why we do this. We want to make sure that they do not have to pay to access entertaining and high-quality entertainment and sports betting analysis.
What makes SGPN different is that, unlike many content companies, we are knowledgeable about gambling and enjoy enhancing our sports viewing experience with sports betting. We are our consumers, and we have an amazing community. While other sports content companies are jumping on the sports betting train as if it is a passing fad, we have been in the space for a decade, and our fans know it. Discerning gamblers and sports fans alike appreciate our content and how we balance entertainment and analysis.
Every day, we are dedicated to providing entertaining and informative shows and written content. With a shifting sports betting landscape, we pride ourselves on being innovators and independent. Consolidation, contraction, and mergers are becoming the norm as the sports betting landscape takes its next steps, but we have carved out a firm foothold. Our podcasts chart well across all platforms and across many sports. Are you looking for tennis content? We do it. XFL? We got that. We are in so many sports and spaces that we cast a wide footprint across the sports and sports betting landscape.
The SGPN community wins together, gives back, and supports each other. Each of the last two years, we have held a 24-hour marathon to raise money for charity. Our most recent marathon raised more than $10,000 for the IM ABLE Foundation. Seeing our community unite for an amazing cause is sweeter than cashing bets with them. Knowing that we have built a relationship and community is something truly special.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Willingness to take risks. As we talked about earlier, the ability to take a chance and set yourself up for success is key. They say that you can make your own luck if you’re prepared, and I have done that with my team at every turn.
Adapting to trends and staying ahead of the curve. In the 21st century, sports betting and sports content has been rapidly evolving. I have worked to keep my team and company ahead of the curve as often as possible. Being willing to pivot and adjust midstream has become a skill many in the industry do not have.
SEO and Analytics. Search engine optimization is critical to success in the content creation game. Being named the Sports Gambling Podcast puts us on some valuable SEO real estate, but we have worked tirelessly to embed SEO best practices throughout our company. We on board all content creators in our SEO best practices. Even when we pick up contributors from corporate gambling and content, they are not on our level for SEO creation. They do not understand how to be nimble and lock down specific SEO trends. As sports fans, we are data and stats fanatics and the analytics for the site and pods give us a new playground. We routinely discuss trends and patterns to help stay ahead of the curve.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book Fans Have More Friends has been an absolute revelation to read. We all always feel that sports fans, and in particular hardcore fans, are more engaging and fun to be around. Well, these two guys actually did the statistical research and proved it. In category after category, sports fans form stronger relationships and are more active consumers.
The trends and analysis that they broke down and dove into revealed so much that we already thought at SGPN, but it gave us a lot of confirmation. Many fans of SGPN say they enjoy us because we are true fans and ride and die with our teams as they do. As corporate sports content companies are trying to stabilize their approaches and figure out how to connect, true sports fans who create content are rising to the top.
