Meet Sean Jackson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sean Jackson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sean below.

Sean, thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.

My family! Throughout my life I have watched my loved ones lead by example. If there was knowledge to be shared they would share it. If someone needed to be helped up they would extend their hand. My grandpa taught me that even something as simple as making someone laugh or smile can go a long way. I understand that I have been blessed with something that everyone may not have which is an opportunity and I all can do is pay it forward.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I am the owner of Grailboyz. I collect and curate vintage clothes, toys, original art, you name it and I probably collect it. Vintage has a special place in my heart because of the feelings a certain piece my evoke or a memory that was revived. I am a big kid at heart. Everything I collect now are things I loved growing up. I always think back to the show ‘Hey Arnold’ on Nickelodeon and remember Arnold having the coolest room ever and wanting to recreate that when I got a place of my own.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. Communication is key. I have the pleasure of interacting with so many different people around the globe because of a shared passion in collecting. Through open communication I was able to make friends and build relationships, which not only helped me get more familiar with my craft, but also led me to more opportunities to expand the brand.

2. Patience. The hunt of finding something rare is my favorite part. My wife always jokes with me that I love looking for something more than actually owning it. Building a collection does not happen overnight. One of my favorite tees took me two years to find and broker a trade for.

3. Have Fun. I love what I do. The day I stop having fun is the day I will do something else.

The advice I would give is always be curious. Curiosity will always make you want to chase the answer and through that you will continue gaining knowledge of your craft.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My wife, Monica. She is the reason Grailboyz exists. Not only did she come up with the name, but also had one of her friends create the logo. I always wanted to get into fashion and curating since I was young. Monica told me you have so many cool things, “why don’t you try curating a set on 1980somethingco’s Instagram live?”

During the pandemic, people started selling on livestream and 1980somethingco had the largest platform in the vintage community. I was lucky enough to be able to book a set and the rest was history.
