Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sean James. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sean, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being the only one in the room is something I’ve gotten used to, but it’s never gotten easier. What drives me, though, is the fierce desire to always bring my whole self wherever I go. Early in my career, I was the youngest staffer at the time in a NYC government agency. I was eager to make my mark but often found myself in rooms filled with people who were much older and did not look like me and didn’t understand where I came from.
In those moments, I could’ve tried to blend in. I could’ve minimized parts of myself to fit the mold that was expected. But I knew that to truly be effective, I had to show up fully, as I am—Black, young, ambitious, and ready to do the work. Those early days taught me that if you’re doing good work, people take notice. And when they see you bringing your whole self into the room, it inspires others to do the same.
It’s easy to feel like you need to prove something when you’re the only one in the room. But I’ve learned that the best way to prove your worth is by staying true to who you are. That’s how I’ve been able to turn every challenge into an opportunity. Showing up as my full self, doing the work, and letting that speak for me—that’s the real key to success.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Sean James, and my journey has always been centered around entrepreneurship, community impact, and creating opportunities for others. I founded VSNWKS.™, a consulting firm in Atlanta, to help diverse founders and CEOs grow their businesses by optimizing operations and building sustainable structures. What excites me most is seeing the transformation that happens when businesses, especially those owned by people of color, unlock their full potential. It’s not just about helping one business scale, but about empowering communities.
One of the things I’m most proud of is our ability to serve a diverse array of clients, from small businesses to government municipalities. To date, we’ve worked with over 367 organizations, helping them streamline their operations, enhance branding, and improve public relations. That’s special to me because it’s about more than just profit; it’s about lifting others as we rise.
Right now, I’m focused on expanding the reach of SCXLE IT™, our operations management and business intelligence program we’re developing. SCXLE IT™ is designed to give traditional early stage CEOs and founders the tools they need to make data-driven decisions and grow their businesses efficiently.
I’m also laying the groundwork for VSNWKS.™ to create its own Economic Development Association, a space where we can drive meaningful impact in our communities through business support and innovation. Everything I do is rooted in helping others thrive, and that’s what keeps me going every day. Additionally, the formation of our Economic Development Association is a passion project for me. It’s an opportunity to create a hub for diverse entrepreneurs, offering resources, networking, and educational programs that are often inaccessible to underrepresented founders. This initiative is about more than business; it’s about building a supportive community where everyone can thrive.
I believe that by lifting the entrepreneurial ecosystem, we can create a ripple effect of success. Whether it’s through mentoring young leaders, advocating for equitable policies, or simply sharing my story, I’m dedicated to fostering an environment where the least, the last and the left behind feel seen, heard, and empowered to succeed. That’s the essence of VSNWKS.™ and my professional journey.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, three qualities have been guiding lights for me: resilience, agility, and a commitment to continuous learning. The entrepreneurial path is filled with setbacks and challenges. Early on, I faced skepticism and barriers that could have easily derailed me. Building resilience has been crucial. For those starting out, I recommend embracing failure as a learning opportunity. Surround yourself with supportive mentors who can help you navigate tough times, and remember that persistence often leads to breakthrough moments. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and being able to pivot when necessary has been essential. Early in my career, I learned that flexibility is a strength. For newcomers, I suggest cultivating a mindset that welcomes change. Stay informed about industry trends and be open to feedback. Being agile allows you to quickly adapt to new challenges and seize opportunities as they arise. I’ve always believed in the power of knowledge. I have seized and continue to seek out every opportunity to learn whether through formal education, reading, or networking. Lastly, I would encourage those early in their careers, make it a priority to seek out workshops, courses, and networking events. Connect with people who inspire you, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Curiosity will be your greatest ally.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always looking to collaborate with passionate, diverse founders, visionary leaders, and innovative thinkers who share a commitment to community impact and business growth. Specifically, I seek individuals and organizations that are focused on three key areas which are social entrepreneurship focused on driving positive change in their communities while building sustainable businesses. Tech Innovators: Creatives who are leveraging technology to solve pressing challenges, particularly in the service industry.
Economic Development Advocates: Professionals who are dedicated to fostering growth and opportunity for underrepresented entrepreneurs.
If you resonate with any of these areas and are eager to create meaningful impact together, I’d love to hear from you! You can connect with me directly through my website at VSNWKS.com, or reach out via LinkedIn. Let’s explore how we can collaborate to uplift our communities and drive innovation together. Whether it’s through partnerships, mentorship, or sharing resources, I believe that by working together, we can achieve extraordinary outcomes.
