Meet Sean Lee

We recently connected with Sean Lee and have shared our conversation below.

Sean, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’m proud to be Asian-American, and my identity has given me immense strength and a deep commitment to proper, authentic representation. This is what led me to establish Haruka. We take deliberate steps to ensure that our authenticity shines through. We meticulously source the best ingredients, not just locally but also directly from Japan and Korea – That’s as authentic as it gets.

At Haruka, we firmly believe in authenticity, so we go straight to the source to bring true and genuine flavors to our dishes. This commitment has resonated with our community, as they can taste and experience the authentic influences that set us apart. The success of our restaurant is a testament to the value of staying true to our roots while embracing the diverse world of food.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the proud owner of Haruka Sake & Sushi, a top-rated sushi spot that serves the La Cañada Flintridge community. At Haruka, we specialize in fusion Japanese cuisine, crafting a blend of traditional Japanese flavors and innovative culinary methods while sourcing our premium ingredients directly from Japan and Korea. Alongside our exceptionally delectable food, we offer a unique and curated selection of sake and wine to enhance the overall dining experience.

What excites me the most is knowing that people enjoy an exceptional meal at Haruka Sake & Sushi. I’m deeply committed to ensuring that our community can access the most fresh and exceptional meals possible. This dedication is mirrored in our staff, who are equally passionate about delivering exceptional meals.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back on my journey, I’ve found these qualities and my overall mindset were pivotal in shaping my role as a leader and the success of Haruka within our community.

Here’s my advice: First, recognize that teamwork is paramount. You do not go far alone. Acknowledge that success is a collaborative effort and that respect is crucial. Show gratitude to your team for their dedication and contributions, and treat them — and everyone else – fairly and respectfully. When employees feel respected, they’re more engaged and motivated.

In a similar vein, I’m always working to nurture teamwork. It’s important to foster collaboration among my team and leverage each member’s strengths. Leaders must recognize that a unified team with a shared purpose is powerful.

Lastly, build lasting and mutually beneficial relationships. I’m dedicated to creating opportunities for my team’s growth and celebrating their milestones. This approach ensures that my team feels valued and committed, which in turn contributes to the success of Haruka. I’m grateful for the chance to embody these values as a leader. I’m equally grateful to the Haruka team for their dedication and care in making Haruka an incredible place to enjoy an incredible meal.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was introduce me to our family’s food business in my twenties. This hands-on involvement ignited my passion for food and crafting memorable meals. Inspired by this, I founded Haruka, where I’m dedicated to offering exceptional and fresh sushi, omakase and other beloved Japanese dishes to the La Cañada Flintridge community.
