We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean Low a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sean, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Purpose is in the effort to see meaning in the mundane, the moment and the grace of revelation. It is the every day and the ability to just take it as it is so that you see what not everyone else does and vice-versa. From there it all becomes a gift to be given and received. All of it larger than yourself and yet within too. That is purpose to me.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I have had this in my bio for years: My obsession is challenging creative businesses to be the best versions of themselves, helping them set the foundation for growth and development and working along side creative business owners to take their businesses as far as they want them to go. Translation: I want artists to find themselves deeper in the meaning of their work, to transcend life into living for those they seek to serve. No one needs what my clients offer. No one. And yet what they provide is the fabric of identity, culture; the very essence of what we all need to evolve ourselves and our lives. The question is how to get paid fairly for the effort, nourished to reach for the unknown only to sit in its discovery. Might sound hyperbolic, but it is how art breathes and the world changes. This is my faith and the foundation of all that I do.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Humility, Emotional Intelligence, Conviction
How would you describe your ideal client?
Someone with the courage of conviction and the humility to know that they do not yet know how to tell a better story. My very worst clients just ask what they should do, my very best want to rethink what they want and the best way to get there. The story of all creative business requires tension no other business does. You get paid for the idea that it might not work and to begin from a place of unknowing, lost in the fog. That is terrifying and purposeful all at once. My ideal client knows how difficult it is to sit there and how best to come out of the fog in a way that works for them. This we discover together and they then inhabit the practice.
