We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean McElwee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sean , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
People who have babies with Down syndrome and don’t know anyone who has it are really scared. So I wanted to encourage them by donating baby onesies to Down Syndrome Associations for their new parent gifts. I include a letter telling them about my life and that their baby is going to be awesome.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I was on a tv show called “Born this Way” and I started getting a lot of keynote speech requests. So I was writing my speech and it’s about people never giving up on their dreams because it could happen if they just have faith. And I said “It Could Happen” and “That’s What Faith Can Do” a lot. Then I got the idea that I should make t-shirts saying that. Then I said some funny stuff on Born this Way and put those things on shirts. Then I had ideas for messages that people need to know like “How Can You Make a Difference if You Aren’t Different.” And “Be the Exception.” And then a bunch of shirts just for people with Down Syndrome too.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I just had ideas and my mom has done some businesses so she knew how to do the business part of it.
Anyone who is getting started stay with it and don’t give up there’s a lot of steps but you can do it.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
It’s really hard getting the word out about my shirts. And expensive to advertise. I have a good social media following but people don’t see every post I make
