We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean Polite a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sean, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
By keeping open to the manifold paths in life. I have been aided by a versatile lot of diversely talented and driven people, whom I’ve been blessed in merely crossing paths with, and even befriending at some point or another. They’ve been my mentors at points. At times been in my family and become family to me. My personal path has had numerous detours, from public schooling to higher education (at the junior/community collegiate and university level), the military (wherein would lie multiple changes of duty type), the performing arts scene (local theater), film/voiceover, radio (college/public), the clerical workforce and even the healthcare forum.
Embracing the notion of “getting lost in the wilderness” has helped yield definitive purpose as well, as with many things in life, the pursuit moreso than the end road is where the heart/fulfilment has root.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m a student/practictioner of voiceover/acting, which has led to some touches of corporate, animation, foreign language, e-learning, commercial, and audiobook ventures. Acting-wise, I’ve touched base with local/community theater in the Northeast Georgia area, and had some involvement in independent film, with background work coming into play as well.
What excites me about it, is that while not every opportunity that comes my way comes to fruition, my name is definitely getting out there, which is encouraging. I’ve gotten to build relationships with a unique range of industry working folks, and receive notice for my talents. I’ve been blessed with some honest, dedicated teachers in my professional training as well.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Put into a trio, I’d say persistence, kindness/courtesy, and curiosity (willingness to do the research) have been most impactful in my journey.
I’d advise those early in their journey to assess who they know or admire for what they’ve acheived more seasonably into their journeys, and make connections with them. By benefit of this wonderful article, they may consider what qualities they possess, and beyond that, what qualities they may need to work at.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
I’m tempted to throw two books into this ring, though they are from the same author. In the earlier question about my journey, Hermann Hesse’s “Siddhartha” definitely rings to mind. (When you somehow feel that there is a unique purpose or plot for you which requires you to step out of your comfort zone/familiar ground, be willing to take that step into uncertainty)
Additionally, Hesse’s “Narcissus and Goldmund” played an important role. As in a number of stories, one can have a “dramatic foil,” who may be more innately tuned in to a suitable path for you. Wayward advice for a vocation and/or specialty can be the best at times from those with your genuine well- being at heart. I was recommended the book by a kind soul of a friend who’s drive has inspired me greatly, and my gratefulness to him in doing so I’ve reminded him about frequently. It was a “right place at the right time” book to dig into, with a morality to immerse myself in.
