We were lucky to catch up with Sebastián Gálvez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Sebastián, thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
I’ve always had a knack for breaking down complex topics into simpler, more digestible ideas, which has allowed me to communicate my thoughts in a clear and concise manner. This skill is especially valuable in ensuring that my message is understood, and I often check for clarity by asking for feedback or gauging the listener’s reaction through active listening.
As an actor, I have extensive experience deconstructing scripts, carefully analyzing each line and dramatic nuance to deliver the message in a precise and impactful way. This practice has greatly enhanced my ability to communicate effectively, not only by expressing ideas clearly, but also by understanding the underlying emotions and intentions behind words.
One of the key aspects of my development as a communicator has been my openness to feedback. Over time, I’ve actively sought constructive criticism and used it as an opportunity for growth. I’ve also worked on refining communication techniques such as active listening, adjusting my body language, and using non-verbal cues to improve my engagement with others.
In fact, my therapist once told me that I am a master of abstract concepts. When I asked what she meant, she explained that I have a unique ability to understand complicated matters and translate them into simple, accessible language for others.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Acting is my number one passion, but storytelling, in all its forms, is something I deeply love as well. When I’m not performing myself, I enjoy coaching others, helping them refine their craft and enhance their performances, always encouraging them to come from a place of truth. This approach, which I learned from renowned acting coach Susan Batson, has shaped my teaching philosophy since I started working at her studio in 2010.
I’m also a perfectionist, which drives me to push until I’m truly satisfied with the work. But more than just being happy with what we’ve done, I strive for a sense of certainty—that the choice made feels right. I believe in the power of preparation and often explore multiple options to ensure there’s room to play, adjust, and evolve. This flexibility allows me and others to grow in the process, always striving to find the most authentic and impactful choices.
Besides all of this, I also enjoy writing my own projects. Crafting stories from scratch allows me to explore new creative avenues and express my ideas in a different way. It’s another outlet where I can bring my passion for storytelling to life, whether it’s through a script or a play.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Resilience and Adaptability:
One of the most impactful qualities I’ve developed in my journey has been resilience and adaptability. The ability to persevere through challenges and stay open to change has been essential, especially in an industry that is often unpredictable. I’ve learned to embrace rejection and setbacks as part of the process, not as failures, but as opportunities to grow.
For those early in their journey, I would say; it’s important to remember that rejection is not a reflection of your worth or talent—it’s simply part of the process. Stay adaptable, learn from each experience, and keep going. The more resilient you are, the more you’ll develop the ability to navigate difficult moments.
2. Continuous Learning and Self-Reflection:
Another key skill has been my commitment to continuous learning. I’ve always sought out opportunities to grow, whether through formal education, workshops, or feedback from mentors and peers. This has helped me refine my craft and become more self-aware of my strengths and areas for improvement.
To those just starting out, I encourage you to remain curious and open to feedback. Never stop learning—whether through formal training or by observing others. Self-reflection is equally important. Regularly take the time to assess your progress and identify areas where you can improve.
3. Communication and Empathy:
Effective communication and empathy have been crucial to both my personal and professional growth. As an actor and teacher, understanding and connecting with others is at the core of what I do. Being able to communicate ideas clearly, listen actively, and empathize with others’ perspectives has helped me build strong relationships and collaborate effectively.
Whether you’re in a creative field or not, cultivating strong communication skills and empathy is essential. Practice active listening and learn to connect with people, not just intellectually, but emotionally as well. It will enhance your ability to work with others and help you grow as a person and professional.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
As a coach, my ideal client is an actor who comes prepared and ready to work. This means they’ve done their homework—learned their lines, made strong character choices, and are ready to take the next step in their process. I want to work with actors who use coaching sessions to fine-tune their craft, whether it’s refining their character’s depth or unlocking that extra layer of performance that helps them book the job. My goal is to help them show up on set with a deep understanding of their character’s journey and a strong foundation, so they can approach their work with confidence and authenticity, no matter what the director throws at them.
As an actor, I’m drawn to directors who have a clear vision for the story, but who also allow room for actors to bring their own creativity to the table. It’s essential to remember that filmmaking is a collaborative art form, and I thrive in environments where the director trusts the actors to contribute their unique perspectives while staying true to the overall vision.
