Meet Sebastian Ignacio Mieres Herrera

We recently connected with Sebastian Ignacio Mieres Herrera and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sebastian Ignacio, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?

Hello First of all..! Never forget education goes first. English is not my native languaje, so I’ll do my best.
Well, I don’t know if i can talk about conditions that allowed my empathy. I think that empathy is a practice for every single day, and every single second. Under a basis question as “what if this happen to me?”
This was my first start line when i was a kid. I remember my mom telling me “What if this happens to you?” and after that everything changed forever.
When i grow up, i become a teacher and a dancer, and that was my opportunity to work on my empathy in a conscious way, because to teach and to dance, means connecting with yourself and with the others, put yourself in their places is fundamental to give something through dance, and also to teach, put yourself in your students places always make you find the path.
Empathy is not automatic, is something that you must to make present in your whole life experience.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

first of all, i dont like to talk in a merchandising languaje, my life and my experiences are not a brand and thats all about when i have to talk about my self o my work.
I’m a natural mover, I grew up in a real middle class family in Santiago de Chile, South America. Both of my parents dance to, not in a professional way, but the love to do it, that’s why I grew watching them dance with so much joy.
i started to dance with them at the age of 6, and after all everything wasn’t the same again. I began dancing traditional dances at the age of 10. I got a degree in Education. Professor of Physical Education at the Metropolitan University of Education Sciences, Bachelor of Arts, with a mention in Dance and Diploma in Applied Musculoskeletal Anatomy, both from the University of Chile. I was a member of the Latin American Traditional Dance Company “Ecos del Mundo” in El Salvador, Central America, and a member of the Folkloric Ensemble “Danzamérica”, touring Italy in different traditional festivals of the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Popular Arts – CIOFF. I has traveled to the United States of America to receive training in Modern Dance, Ballet and Release Technique, thanks to an invitation from Felipe O. Moltedo to train with the Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company. In Chile I had performed for different choreographers and companies: Mauro Barahona, Tamara Cubas, Nury Gutes, Rodrigo Fernández, Daniela Murias, Paula Meru, “Compañía Polar Danza Contemporánea”, “Compañía Danza en Cruz” and independent projects. I have been dedicating myself to the teaching of dance and movement in different social contexts, as well as researching the dialogue of dance and audiovisual media. In 2023, the Creation program of AREA Espai de Dansa i Creaciò in Barcelona ends, with the piece “The Silence of an Indelible Mark” premiered at Nunart Guinardo.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

See and perceibe the world sorrounding you, perseverance and kindness.

My best advice, “we always can be in other one’s place, be kind”

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

My biggest area Of growth in this last year has been the knowledge of create a strogn community, this world need love, compassion and tenderness, this three must be developed with your communnity, as well as with yourself.
