Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sebastian Taylor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Sebastian, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
Observation of important individuals in my life is a key part of where that comes from. My parents especially. Both came from broken homes and no generational wealth to speak of. It all came down to what they were willing to work for. When my siblings and I came along it made it that much harder for them to do the things they wanted to do. I knew that early on and I was aware of the difficulty being a parent was for them. It’s the hardest job in the world and they persisted each and everyday so that we would have food on our plates. I took that as a reminder that if my parents are working this hard everyday to make sure that I am fed and housed and can do all the things I want to do then what is that I am willing to do for them to make sure they don’t have to worry about me. Another side to that is my ambition. I feel like I have always dreamed of lofty futures for myself but I have always been determined to turn those into goals and make dreams into reality.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am a film director. I just recently wrapped on a short film and have been in the post production process with aims to make a festival run next year and develop the film into a feature. What excites me most about this project is the feedback received throughout the whole process that validates me as a writer/director. I’ve always been a film junky in a way and directing film is what I am passionate about but to have other people working in the industry believe in your vision and idea is amazing. One really beautiful thing about the whole process is the fact that my wife is a part of it, co-writing and starring in the film. Going the whole process of filmmaking can be maddening but to have someone there with you all the way is a blessing. Just to expand on the project, it is called “Clean Queens”. We plan to premiere it soon and we are very excited about what it turns into.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think patience is key. Gets you through tough times and is a necessary skill when navigating life and relationships. Discipline is something that can move mountains for you and the most progress I have ever made with anything is by being disciplined in my actions. Third and maybe most important is curiosity. I have always had the desire to learn. Something, anything, it could be random but there is a wealth of knowledge out in the world and I think expanding your horizons makes you a better person but also better at what you do no matter what it is. As a director and writer I am thankful of that curiosity because it makes for better stories.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I am always looking for people to collaborate with. I think film itself is the most collaborative process one can go through and as director who is early in their career I think it’s important to surround yourself with trustworthy individuals who are hungry and want to create special works whether a comedy or blockbuster or the next marvel movie. Film is an art and one that I value because of its magic and I seek partners that want to create beautiful works of art but also create projects that are fun and meaningful.
