We were lucky to catch up with Sebra Debrecht recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sebra , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
My path here has definitely not been a straight line. I’ve tested out many hats, but a driving force for me has always been making a positive environmental impact, even in my small way, and building something of my own. My love for gardening and my past experience as a floral designer kept calling me back, and I craved a creative outlet aligned with my values. This combination is something I couldn’t completely find in the corporate world, or elsewhere, so I decided I needed to create it myself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m an artist, gardener and florist, and The Rambling Florist is my passion project turned into a growing small business. It really all started with my love of flowers – everything about them from the simple joy a vase of flowers brings, to growing them from seed, the process of pressing them and the stories they hold.
At The Rambling Florist, I specialize in preserving precious floral moments. My most popular service is wedding bouquet preservation – taking stunning wedding day flowers and crafting them into custom-framed artwork that becomes a cherished heirloom. But I also go beyond weddings. I preserve flowers from baby showers, anniversaries, birthdays, memorials – really any occasion where flowers play a significant role. I also create original botanical art pieces and prints using flowers I grow myself, bringing a truly unique, garden-to-glass touch to my work.
The most exciting part about the work is definitely the emotional connection. I get to be a part of keeping someone’s memories alive through my art. And it’s especially potent when I get to witness the joy on my customer’s faces when they see their flowers transformed into a piece of art they can cherish forever… it’s pretty special.
I would also say that, with all things in nature, there is a sort-of magic when you open the press for the first time. I never get tired of it.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say embracing failure as a learning opportunity is definitely the number skill I’ve leaned on and have to remind myself of constantly. My pressing practice involved a lot of brown, moldy flowers, but each misstep taught me something valuable, more so than my successes.
Cultivating a growth mindset and being persistent. Building a business, like any creative pursuit, requires constant learning, adaptation, and honing of our craft to build something meaningful. It’s like drinking from a firehose in the beginning, and looking back, even in just a year of business I’ve come a long way and I don’t see myself slowing down, nor would I want to!
Overall I would say don’t be afraid to experiment, fail, and learn. Embrace the journey, and remember that consistency is key.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
That’s a great question, and honestly, it’s something I grapple with constantly. I love collaborating with people who excel in areas where I’m weaker – it’s so valuable to have that support. But I also thrive on learning new things and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone. Especially in these early stages of my business, I don’t always have the resources to outsource tasks, so I’ve had to figure things out on my own.
Luckily, Cincinnati has an incredible community of supportive entrepreneurs and resources. I’ve learned that acknowledging your weaknesses is crucial, but you don’t have to become an expert in everything. Focus on honing your strengths – they’re what make you and your business unique. Go all in on what you do best, and be a resource for others in your area of expertise. It’s a give-and-take, a collaborative ecosystem where everyone benefits.
