We were lucky to catch up with Selena Ivette recently and have shared our conversation below.
Selena, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome has been a significant challenge and one of my greatest accomplishments. As I continue to develop my skills and gain new experiences, I often find myself caught in the cycle of imposter syndrome once again. The most rewarding part of this journey is learning how to cope with it. Whenever I get caught up in my thoughts, I “check to ensure my feet are on the floor.” This practice helps me get “in my body” and “out of my head.” By focusing on validating myself rather than seeking outside validation, I have been able to truly thrive.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Since I was four, dance has been my passion, providing comfort and peace. I have always loved performing on stage and in front of audiences. When I dance, I feel free. From the beginning, I’ve been interested in turning my passion into a career. As a Miami HEAT Dancer, I learned a lot about properly taking care of my body. While in South Florida, I pursued a Master’s Degree in Health Administration at FAU. There, I gained the skills to develop “SWEAT with SELENA.” Initially an online group fitness class, “SWS” became a safe place for women of color to learn about health and wellness. This March, we hosted the 2nd annual Women’s Wellness event and the first of many “Hot Girl Walk in Winter Park.” I love uniting women in a positive environment to help them become the best version of themselves, and I look forward to more in-person events in the third and fourth quarters.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, charisma, discipline, and consistency have been crucial in my journey. When you have a goal you want to achieve, write it down. Then, outline the steps needed to reach that goal. Start small and gradually work through each step, steadily progressing towards your goal.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book “The Four Agreements” has been life-changing for me. This book highlights what truly matters in this world. As a previously anxious person, this book helped me to get out of my head and asses each obstacle objectively.
