Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Selena Lincoln. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Selena, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I believe I get my resiliency from my parents. As a child I watched them grow and scale a trash business. They started with a small office in our home with a truck and trailer to multiple locations with thousands of customers and tens of employees. Unfortunately they did eventually close due to a variety of reasons. After dedicating 10 years of their lives, closing, and rebuilding and living an even better life than they envisioned, it just gives me great strength witnessing their evolution.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Hi, I’m Selena! I’ve been practicing hair for 11 years. I started cosmetology school as a junior in high school. I come from a very creative family. I’ve always loved art, crafting, and sharing those experiences with people. I think all of those combined just scream future stylist. I’ve spent a large part of my career just trying to learn and make enough money to pay my bills. Throughout those years I slowly collected the items I needed to build a salon suite. My goals right now are to just meet new people, perfect my craft, and offer people an undeniable experience. My stretch goal is to build a community of clients and artists that align. It’d be my dream to build a high end salon full of extremely talented stylists with a hunger for learning and a passion for delivering meticulous art work. I not only want my clients to get amazing work but for stylists to have a space in which they can grow, thrive, and be themselves. I’ve spent many years working at places I didn’t like or didn’t quite fit. I recognize the difference in artists and art work and really admire the spectrum. I know their is a client for every stylist and vice versa. I believe we should be honored for our differences and not made to feel we should fit a mold. Squares blocks don’t fit in round holes .. so why force it?
New services I’m offering that I’m ecstatic about are Hair extensions and Toupees! Adding hair to our person can add an undeniable surge in confidence. I believe we are our best selves when we feel most confident. Nothing makes me happier than to see someone gain their confidence back! I will be announcing the addition of these services on my social media accounts!
Thanks you for taking your time to read this! Xoxo Selena
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Patience, discipline, and openness by far are the most impactful skills/qualities I learned. When one failed me the other had by back. You’re are not going to be perfect. I never was and I never will be. Patience created room for disorganization. Discipline created space for my inevitable return in my attempt to be patient. Openness created space for my heart to return when both failed me. Each one has a crucial role and was essential for me in feeling safe as I learned from my failures. My only advice is to love yourself through this journey, speak to yourself like a friend, and dream as big as you can and break it down to bit size pieces.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed I often just take a moment to recognize the emotion, and why I’m feeling it. I feel the most overwhelmed when dealing with money. If I’m having a slow week I try reminding myself that I have food in the fridge, people that love me, and god given free will to get into a different situation if need be. Often times my brain creates situations that don’t exist. Like no one will ever book with me again and I’ve made my last dollar. (lol the drama) I just do my best to live day to day but truthfully moment to moment. No other time exists, but the present. Also why suffer twice? In imagination and reality?? No thank you. One time is enough for me.
