Semarria, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I strongly believe that in order to find your purpose, you have to reconnect with who you were when you were pure; before outside opinions, labels, or anything else influenced you.
To be honest, it took me a while to find my purpose. I grew up very career-driven, so at the time, my purpose was tied to my career in the Air Force. I’m a high-performing individual and have always excelled at what I do, but that wasn’t my true purpose.
It wasn’t until I had my daughters that I sat back and rethought who I am and what I’m here to do. As I looked at my daughters and noticed certain qualities in them, I reflected on who I was as a child. What was I like naturally? I was a natural servant leader—observant and always wanting to help others to a certain extent. That quality stayed with me into adulthood. That’s my purpose: to be a servant leader.
Now, as a figure in the homeschool industry, I’ve found a space to fulfill my purpose. I’m able to serve moms who need help starting their homeschool journey, using my natural skills to guide and support them. As a result, thousands of parents have trusted me and my brand, Homeschool Gang, to help them transition into homeschooling.
This may sound crazy, but we all have our purpose buried within us. We just need to bring it to light and place it in a space where it can shine.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the creator and founder of Homeschool Gang, a community and resource hub dedicated to helping parents transition into homeschooling without feeling overwhelmed or stressed. My brand also aims to bring visibility to the homeschool community by showing what it truly looks like.
Right now, there is a growing trend in the homeschool industry, which I find exciting. I’m currently working on a private community for our homeschool parents who need additional support. This will be a safe space to ask questions and address challenges that we, as homeschool parents, often struggle with but can’t find help for elsewhere. I also have an exciting lineup of speakers planned to share valuable insights with the community.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Resilience, Patience, and Persistence.
The advice I’d give is to keep your head down and focus on what you’re building. The world may not understand or relate to what you’re doing because it’s your journey. If you follow those three qualities, by the time you look up, you’ll realize you have everything that you worked for.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I’m overwhelmed, I use breathing techniques. I’ll breathe in for 4-5 seconds, hold, and then breathe out for a few more seconds. Breath control helps regulate my body, which in turn regulates my mind. After that, I assess the situation to figure out why I’m feeling overwhelmed.
Am I overwhelmed because I didn’t clean the kitchen before bed, and now everything has piled up? Or am I overwhelmed because I’m stepping into something new that I know nothing about?
Lastly, I focus on the positive things I can control. For example, at least I have a dishwasher that I can use. These steps help me worry less and minimize the feeling of overwhelm.
