We were lucky to catch up with Semeyer Sutton recently and have shared our conversation below.
Semeyer, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I’ve learned that being unapologetically myself is key. My unique energy and presence command attention, allowing me to own any space I’m in. By being friendly, approachable, and authentic, I’ve found that people are often pleasantly surprised by the value I bring to the table. Embracing my individuality has become my superpower.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Hello, I’m Semeyer Sutton, also known as Mya Luciano. As a multifaceted creative, I wear several hats: model, content creator, hairstylist, makeup artist, photographer, and agency owner.
What excites me most is the ability to empower others through my work. Whether it’s helping someone find confidence through a photoshoot or providing a platform for fellow creatives through my agency, I’m passionate about fostering inclusivity and self-expression.
My brand, THE REBEL AGENCY, is dedicated to promoting diversity and body positivity in the entertainment and beauty industries. We provide a safe space for artists to thrive and offer services ranging from photoshoots to event production.
Stay tuned for upcoming projects, including new photoshoot concepts, workshops, and exciting collaborations! Thank you for being part of my journey.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
My skills in sales, marketing, and photo/video editing have been game-changers in my journey. They’ve given me the versatility to succeed in any business. If you’re just starting out, I recommend gaining experience in these areas through:
• On-the-job training (like my retail experience)
• Seminars with entrepreneurs
• eBooks
• YouTube tutorials
These resources will help you develop the skills you need to thrive!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I’m grateful for the incredible mentors in my life who’ve helped me overcome challenges and achieve success. Ahmani, my model mentor, taught me the value of versatility, public speaking, social media management, modeling, and networking.
Maria, my business partner from MONAT, showed me how to balance multiple tasks, stay organized, focus on numbers, and develop my sales and marketing skills.
Zion, my photography friend, shared his expertise on photography, lighting, and modeling, inspiring me to take my passions seriously.
These remarkable individuals have played a significant role in shaping me into the person I am today.
