We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Serena Simpson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Serena below.
Hi Serena , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I think growing up I never completely felt seen by my family or my peers. It was always expected of me to do less, be less. In my early education I was put into special ed classes due to a low IQ coping with dyslexia and ADD alongside many other children that were being diagnosed and overmedicated.
With the expectation of me not doing much in my life pushed me to be the woman that I am today. Today I am one of the very few female Sound Mixer‘s in the film industry, probably the youngest. A very successful with a family and a stained glass business that fulfills my creative soul.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I just finished filming Sweet Magnolias Season 4 for Netflix. I have decided to take the entire summer off to spend time with my family and work on custom pieces of stained glass.
I’m currently getting prepared for the shade festival in Grant Park Atlanta.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Perseverance and dreaming
People say fake it to make it. But there is some truth in that. Telling yourself that you can do it, even when all odds are against you.
When I decided to start working with stained glass I had no idea what I was doing. My first completed piece was a 2‘ x 4.5‘ leaded stained glass piece of a UFO in the desert. I even installed it in the door myself.
Early in my career in the film industry I was given a small piece of advice. Always dream big. If money was no object what would you do in this moment to either fix or re-create filming. I find myself using that advice every day.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
My left brain needs to be artistic at all times! It makes me feel a whole. So I dabbled in a few hobbies. At one point I had been doing taxidermy, way before I had children. Name a craft and I probably have done it. But I found that I was OK at everything.
The saying jack of all trades master of none is true. I believe that you should find that one thing that sparks joy and that you truly are good at and run with it. Stained glass is that for me. I could spend hours in my small studio. I loved it so much that I gave up my walk-in closet to create a small Stainglass studio in my house.
My next dream, a large artist loft!
