We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Serenaya. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Serenaya below.
Serenaya, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I keep my creativity alive by allowing myself time to process my own emotions, but also by consistently putting myself in spaces with other creative people. Creativity sparks creativity, so being in spaces where you can allow yourself to be free and unfiltered with others can help it thrive. That being said, I also like to challenge myself in solitude whenever I do have those occasional creative blocks. I’ll try an exercise I’ve never done, watch an interview or a documentary from someone that inspires me so I can get a different outlook on way to approach things, or even do something as simple as take a walk so that I can give my brain a break before coming back to it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m an R&B artist who writes about the ups and downs of everyday relationships, whether that’s with friends, lovers, or even myself. I’m a first-generation Ghanaian-American from Frisco, Texas, and my music blends introspective lyrics with soulful melodies. I love inviting listeners into vulnerable moments through songs that feel both personal and relatable.
Right now, I’m really focused on building my artistry and growing my audience. I just went through a big rebrand, changing my artist name to Serenaya, which marks a whole new era of music. I’ve also been hosting an artist showcase in LA called Soulstice Sounds, which has become a beautiful community for local musicians and music lovers. This next chapter is all about expansion: more music, more shows, and more opportunities to connect with people through art.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think an important skill to have is knowing how to listen. In the music world, there can be a lot of egos that you may have to deal with, and being the loudest person in the room isn’t always the most impressive thing. Sometimes it’s being the one who listened to others or made the most emotional impact. People don’t always remember what you say, but they’ll remember how you made them feel and I take that mantra seriously.
The other skill I find super important is organization. Even though this is a creative industry, at the end of the day, being an artist is like being a business owner and you still need to know what is going on and where your music is.
Lastly, I would just say just have fun. I know for myself sometimes I can get caught up in wanting to make everything perfect, but then I remember that a lot of beautiful things can come from imperfection. As long as you’re enjoying what you’re doing, that’s what really matters.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the past year, I released my first album, My Universe, grew my artist showcase, Soulstice Sounds, and rebranded to my new name, Serenaya. In between the album release and the rebrand, I spent a lot of time experimenting with my sound and refining my vocals more and more so that I could bring the best version of my artistry to life. I’ve also gotten to do a lot more live shows now that I run one myself, and I’m loving not only getting to be on stage more, but getting to connect with so many amazing artists that come through to the events.
