Meet Sergio Fernandez

We recently connected with Sergio Fernandez and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sergio, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Por supuesto, aquí tienes la traducción al inglés con un estilo literario y cuidado, como si fuera para un libro:

That question now feels easy to answer because it belongs to the past. As Steve Jobs once said, “You can only connect the dots looking backward.” I remember I had just turned 18 and was surrounded by a circle that offered little inspiration. In the neighborhood where I lived, there were no success stories, no role models to draw motivation from. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted for my life, but I was absolutely certain of what I didn’t want.

At the time, the quickest and easiest path was to join the military and move to a city far from home. Everything about it felt exciting because it was new: discipline, enthusiasm, and learning. I gave it my all during those first weeks, but that intensity took its toll—I injured my knee. The injury forced me to return home, and the mere thought of going back to the same old place left me feeling empty, almost depressed.

During that period, I decided to organize my room, perhaps as a way to bring order to my thoughts as well. While going through my belongings, I stumbled upon some drawings I had made over the years. Rediscovering them stirred something inside me, though I couldn’t quite put it into words. Not long after, a family member asked me to accompany them to get a tattoo.

I remember being completely fascinated as I watched the tattoo artist at work. Every movement, every detail captivated me. My interest must have been obvious because at one point, he asked if I might want to try using some old machines he no longer needed. I don’t know exactly why, but something deep inside me urged me to say yes, to give it a try—just once.

That moment was transformative. I can’t fully explain it, but the instant I held the machine and made my first tattoo, I knew: I had found my purpose.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I spend most of my time designing and tattooing, striving to create unique works for each client. Seeing their satisfaction with the final result fills me with joy and pride. At the same time, I run my own studio in Spain, SEVEN TATTOO, where we’ve built one of the best teams in the country. We are fortunate to welcome clients from all over Europe, and it’s incredibly inspiring to see how people from so many different places trust us with their ideas and stories.

Another project I’m deeply passionate about involves helping other tattoo artists grow their careers. Many talented individuals lack the opportunities to reach their full potential, and that’s where we come in. Through mentorship programs and seminars, we aim to accelerate their learning process and help them achieve higher quality in every aspect of their work.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

For me, the first and most important step is to surround yourself with people who share your direction and vision. Enthusiasm, artistic goals, and camaraderie are essential pillars. When you find yourself in the right environment, your life begins to flow in such a way that learning—both personal and professional—happens almost effortlessly.

From there, curiosity, discipline, and gratitude for life become fundamental elements. Focusing on all the good that each moment brings will help you maintain a continuous sense of positivity, allowing you to see countless opportunities for growth and learning in your everyday life.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

Aquí tienes la traducción al inglés, manteniendo el tono emotivo y con un estilo refinado:

One of the most meaningful experiences in my life is the vivid memory of how I grew up. My parents had me at a young age, and at that time, they had nothing. They simply worked tirelessly to provide the best they could for my sister and me from the moment we were born.

They came up with the idea of buying a house, demolishing it, and building a new one to sell it for a better financial return. They repeated this process several times, and by the time I turned 14, we had lived in six different houses. Throughout that journey, I was able to witness firsthand how challenging and demanding it was for them to build those homes. They did almost everything with the help of some of my relatives, and even I contributed, helping however I could as a child.

Seeing the value and sacrifice behind those efforts firsthand taught me, indirectly, the importance of doing things with passion and care. It’s a lesson I’ll carry with me forever and something I’ll never forget.
