Meet Seth Larson

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Seth Larson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Seth below.

Hi Seth, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Well that’s actually a funny question because our company’s name is Resilient Roofing. Most people think that is a reference to our products or our service, but it’s actually built on, and a testament to our resilience as a company. I hate patting myself on the back, but as the leader I must lead by example, and I have shown the entire company a ton of examples of perseverance, resilience and never ending determination time and time again.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I realized that I absolutely love what I do after talking to my kids about it. Somehow we were talking about work, and I told them how excited I was to go into work the next day, and they looked at me like I just ate a rotten banana. I think culture has taught them that they are not supposed to enjoy going to work, and like I said, I never consciously thought about it, but I love everything I do every day, the people, the customers, the projects we complete, everything.

When you work with the public, especially in home services where we go into peoples homes, there is never a shortage of excitement! The wide spread personalities, expectations and preferences keeps everyone on their toes, and gives us all something to work toward which is never ending improvement as a company.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First is focus. Warren Buffet said this is the most important thing in separating him from other investors, and it’s no different with me and how I’m always working to separate us as a company.

Next is Adaptability. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is critical for success in business. Entrepreneurs must be able to pivot quickly and adjust their strategies to meet the needs of the market.

And finally comes Resilience. Starting and running a business can be a difficult and challenging process. Entrepreneurs must possess the resilience to overcome obstacles and persist in the face of adversity.

If someone who is early in their entrepreneurial journey just zooms out once in a while and thinks of those three things, along with how much they are helping their clients, they will never look back.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I think when an entrepreneur or small business owner feels overwhelmed, it can be only one of two things.

The first thing it could be is just normal growing pains. When you start out you have to wear all the hats, and as you grow you have to take some off. Always take the hats off first that you least enjoy, or are the worst at performing, and hire those out. That allows you more time to work on the things you enjoy, or are better at, which could be any part of the business.

The second thing it could be is an over-controlling entrepreneur . There is a bigger problem here that needs to be worked on, since this will limit the size capability of this type of entrepreneur. Maybe that’s where they are comfortable, but there is not much chance of growth for this type. Some people are just happy with the ‘stay small and keep it all’ strategy, but they can’t complain if they are overwhelmed since they did that to themselves. The fix here is just to take less clients.
