Meet Seth Larson

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Seth Larson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Seth, so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
Everyone is susceptible to burn out, but I like the philosophy that Warren Buffet has; Love What You Do. Buffet often advises people to pursue what they are passionate about. Doing what you love can prevent burnout because work feels less like a chore and more like a hobby. He even wrote a book called tap dancing to work. So the basic idea is that if you’re not happy at what you’re doing, find something that makes you happy, then find a way to make money at it. I absolutely love going to work and whenever I talk about it with my kids I say “I get to go to work today” instead of ‘I have to’ and they notice those little things.

Thanks, can you give someone who is thinking of starting a business or even a side-hustle some advice on getting started, even if they are hesitant?
Nothing is really that hard once you’ve done it. Before you do it, we tend to tell ourselves stories about how hard it will be, but once we just dive in we quickly realize that anyone can do it. So that is my advice; just dive in and don’t think about it anymore.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The funny thing is a great skill to have isn’t a skill at all but a mindset. The mindset of setting out to FIND what you need to know or how to do something is the most important mindset. That does become a skill after a while, so that is for sure number one. That, along with the desire to learn. Those two will get you most everything you want in life, but not quite all of it. If you take those two qualities, coupled with the discipline of never giving up you can literally do anything you want to in life.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I might look at this a little differently than most. Currently, we employ 50 people between our two companies, and whenever I am feeling overwhelmed or ‘busy’, that means I am doing a horrible job at delegating. My goal is to have the minimum number of tasks in any given day, so do we need to hire someone else? is it a lack of training? How can we empower more people within our team? Or are these just one time task that I can knock out? Once I’ve gone through those thoughts, the feeling of overwhelm tends to go away.
