We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shakayla Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Shakayla, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Hey, I’m Shakayla Harris. I work as a Licensed Nail Technician in Freeenn’s Palace, right in Dallas, Texas. In 2020, I began my career as a self-taught manicurist after being let go from my position at Amazon. My passion became creating artwork through doing nails, which truly made me want more for my family and myself and helped me become a better person. One day, I took a seat and asked myself a series of questions to figure out what kind of life I wanted to lead. I quickly realized that it had nothing to do with working for someone else. Even though I didn’t have the best upbringing, I always determined to make the most of what I had, and in the 25 years that I have been alive, I have been fortunate to achieve a lot. I’m eager to keep developing and expanding both my business and career in the beauty industry beyond what I could have ever imagined. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve myself and am open to change.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My specialty is making people who require nail care feel even more beautiful after they leave my chair. I work on nails full-time. In the process of developing my career in the nail and beauty industry, I’m always eager to meet new people and make friends. I’ve become an expert at painting or drawing on nails. You can find me on Instagram at @Nailzbydynique_, and I’m constantly seeking for new customers. I am selling products that include hand lotion, essential oils, and scrubs. In addition, I recently moved to Dallas, Texas, to the one and only Jonathan Wrights Freeenn’s Palace location.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
To be honest, I still live by these three main principles: greatness takes time, never give up, and consistency. All of us have faced challenges in our lives; what matters is how we overcame them to improve our position in life or our careers. The best advise I can give to anyone at any stage of life right now is to start somewhere, no matter how long it takes to achieve your goals, and to know what to do even if things don’t turn out the way you had hoped in the beginning.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
The most impactful thing my mother ever did for me was her willpower to keep going.
