We were lucky to catch up with Shakira Johnson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Shakira , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
It began when I was in my early 20’s I decided to enroll in J & Company Christian Modeling Company which was founded by International Model, Cancer Survivor and Ostomy Advocate Jearlean Taylor. For six weeks I attended courses which focused on self-esteem building, modeling, modeling etiquette and posing. We had weekly classes and assignments that were engaging and thought provoking. I tell people all the time that being under her tutelage and having her as my mentor really changed the trajectory of my life.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a Brand Owner and Stylist I have the pleasure of serving Kurve (pronounced cur•vy) Queens from all walks of life. Our Brands: Kira’s Kouture Boutique & All Kurves Matter are committed to curating fashion that accentuates every Kurve and compliments every figure. Our motto is whether you are a size 2 or 32 “All Kurves Matter”.
My vision is to build and grow our community and expand our Movement across the globe. We are igniting confidence in women and and teaching them the power of their own Krown. I do not take lightly the opportunity to equip, ignite and empower others. I truly believe that my passion has led me to my purpose.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I think one of the things that impacted me for the better was self-acceptance. Loving me for who I already was and not what others believed I should be. Another valuable lesson was understanding the impact of self-investment. I started surrounding myself with people who were where I desired to be people who were confident and seemingly fearless. I started using my voice more and overcame my fears of being rejected by others. Lastly, self-care has become an essential part of my daily routine. Whether it’s taking time to stay home and relax or taking a moment to deep breathe, I’ve discovered the importance of these practices and how it benefits me mentally, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I’d have to say I typically pray first. Prayer is my favorite time it’s when I get to take off my invisible cape and be completely vulnerable with God. Prayer can help one to center their thoughts, feelings and emotions. Aside from prayer I hone in or what I’m grateful for especially in moments when things don’t seem to be panning out as planned. Expressing gratitude definitely releases those happy endorphins which lead to one focusing more on the positives than the negatives. Lastly, I’d say journaling even if it’s a voice memo in the phone or a quick note on a post it. Journaling allows one to express one’s thoughts and feelings as they are happening. Journaling is also a great way to monitor your progress especially if you are working through a difficult task or project.
