Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Shakti Rios. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Shakti, thank you for joining us today and sharing your experiences and acquired wisdom with us. Burnout is a huge topic these days and so we’d love to kick things off by discussing your thoughts on overcoming or avoiding burnout
Burnout, as I have come to know it and respect it, is not necessarily about doing too much. In that experience I learned that it was also about doing what is incorrect for us and/or doing in an incorrect way. I experienced pure burnout at about age 32 – as a mom of a toddler, running multiple businesses, training competitively in my physique and not realizing that HOW I was moving in my world was completely incompatible with my energy system.
I found the Human Design system in 2016, shortly after my son was born. I would spend YEARS studying this system before I fully understood the implications of what I was learning. You could say that while I was enamored of this system, I didn’t really respect the knowledge I was receiving from it.
When my burnout hit, I didn’t really have a lot of choices left. I was either going to respect the wisdom of what this system was giving me, or I was going to end up really really sick for a long time. I knew that my mom moment of reckoning had come. It was then that I started applying what I had learned and restructuring my businesses and my daily life to be more congruent with what I had learned about my own design. It took time to decipher these nuances and plug them into my life in a practical way.
A few years later I would have done that so successfully that I’d have a wildly profitable business, two children and be the most fulfilled I had ever felt in my life. Because of this, I now coach female entrepreneurs in this system to help them match their strategy with their energetic blueprint in order to have greater success and eliminate burnout.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As my title implies, I am a business alignment mentor for rebel visionaries that want to succeed wildly in alignment with their values, their spirit and their natural energy rhythms. I’m a big believer that you do not have to sacrifice your soul for success and I mentor women daily in recovering their essential self from self abandonment and trauma in order to find greater fulfillment and success.
I think what makes my specific brand so unique is that I was a wellness practitioner for over a decade. I was a medical massage therapist, yoga instructor, EFT and psychic practitioner and have helped countless people through trauma integration and deep healing. Along that path I kept being consulted by entrepreneurs which is how I eventually found myself working with that specific group of individuals.
My work focuses on the deep knowing that we are capable of succeeding healthily only to the degree that we heal our conditioning and deepest traumas so that we can be sure we are not pursing success from a toxic place. I have seen the impact of quantum healing and powerfully energy transforms reality. My clients experience bonafide miracles daily and that is probably my favorite thing ever.
Curiously, I am a child of immigrant parents (Cuban) and grew up really poor and without any examples of what entrepreneurial life was life. I’ve been an outlier in my family across all fields – I was born with a fatal heart condition which has left me with a lifelong disability, I”m queer, intensely metaphysical and seem to defy every logical “rule” society likes to believe is necessary for living a good life.
My life right now feels really magical and blessed and it was really a ground up experience. It’s been built very meticulously year over year and I’m truly proud of it. I think this is also why I’m so effective in my coaching and mentorship with clients because I’ve done everything I teach.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resilience. Knowing how to keep going even when everything seems to be on fire and make no sense is a vital part of leadership. When you lead, you are entering new territory. Learn to roll with the punches and not take anything too seriously for too long.
Faith. Trust your inner sense of wisdom above everything. Success is NOT logical despite what you are being taught. It’s truly a miraculous experience that is truly unique to each person and requires that you trust your inner wisdom.
Being Coachable. Allow yourself to learn new things or to examine what you have done in a new way. Don’t be afraid of being the new kid in any room. Getting into ponds bigger than yours is HOW you swim with big fish.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Overwhelm happens when I tend to zoom way in. I become myopic and obsessive over any number of things and don’t know what to prioritize or rank. I’ve recognized that having ADHD leads to overwhelm very quickly if I am not mindful. So I’ve done a number of things to support me.
1. I hired help in my business. I spent most of my career doing everything myself and I gravely underestimated how much I needed help. Hiring a VA to support me and my work has been life changing. It’s also given me someone to be accountable to which has helped me step up in staying on top of my stuff.
2. I take a break. For real. One thing I did this year is a downgraded my phone to a flip phone. I only have internet devices at home and when I’m working. If I’m out and with my kids at soccer practice or the bookstore – I’m offline. Being online all the time created enormous anxiety and overwhelm. It was way too easy to doomscroll and work constantly. Since downgrading I take mental breaks all the time and it’s been so good for me and my family dynamic.
3. I wake up before my kids, take about 10 minutes to do some sort of meditation work and then read with my coffee. Right now I’m reading a book on the Silva Method for Meditation, but I bounce between several books at any given time. I love to read and being able to be with myself for those moments early in the day sets the tone for me to feel grounded and embodied.
4. I exercise at least 2x a week. I lift heavy and it allows my body to feel strong, and to shake off excess energy that gets built up during the week.
5. I eat. I have an awful tendency of skipping meals to stay productive. This was creating anxiety, fatigue and blood sugar issues. This added to any overwhelm that could come around. Since eating to support my energy levels, I’ve noticed a massive drop in my overwhelm.
I have many more things I do, but these I would say are the most critical.
