Meet Shana Rami

We were lucky to catch up with Shana Rami recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shana, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.

I am an immigrant who once owned a business in my home country. Almost nine years ago, I embarked on a new journey to the United States, coming here alone. Initially, I worked for others, helping them grow their businesses and achieve success. Yet, deep down, I always longed for the independence and freedom that came with having my own enterprise.

Throughout my time working for others, I often envisioned starting my own business. I didn’t know when or how it would happen, but I learned an invaluable lesson: to trust the universe. You don’t need to know every detail about your future; when the timing is right and you’ve given your best effort, opportunities will present themselves.

After 8 and a half years of hard work and perseverance, I finally took the leap to start my own business. I realized that my mental health and well-being were far more important than any paycheck. My last job, which many considered a dream position, came with immense pressure. I was working for a large company at a high level, but the stress was overwhelming. Leaving behind a stable income to venture into the unknown was daunting, but I felt a profound certainty that it was the right choice for me.

Starting my own business has been an incredible journey filled with ups and downs. While there are days when I feel overwhelmed or anxious about the future, I remind myself of my past job. My answer is always a resounding ‘no.’ This realization reassures me that I made the right choice.

I am committed to doing my best every day, embracing the challenges, and learning to be kind to myself along the way. I believe that every step, even the difficult ones, brings me closer to my dreams. I am excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead as I continue this journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

One of the driving forces behind my decision to open my own business was my deep desire to share the art of sewing and design with others. This craft has been a lifeline for me, enabling me to create a fulfilling life in a new country. Through teaching, I aspire to inspire others to discover their own creativity and passion for fashion. I believe that by empowering individuals with these skills, I can help them embark on their own transformative journeys, just as I did.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. **Passion for Sewing:** Embarking on your sewing journey begins with a profound love for the craft. If you don’t nurture this passion, I promise you will find it challenging to persevere; there may come a day when you feel tempted to give up. However, when you embrace this love, it becomes the heartbeat that sustains you through challenges and inspires your creativity.

2. **Communication Skills:** The second essential skill is mastering the art of communication with your clients. Don’t worry if it feels unfamiliar at first; this skill will naturally develop as you immerse yourself in the sewing process.

3. **Customer Satisfaction:** Most importantly, your ultimate goal is to create a dress that your customer adores. When a woman feels beautiful and confident in her attire, it radiates through every moment she wears it. Her joy at events or gatherings becomes a reflection of your artistry and dedication. Remember, each dress you create is not just a garment; it’s a celebration of confidence and self-expression.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

During those challenging days when I feel overwhelmed and tired, both physically and in my soul, I’ve learned the importance of pausing and allowing myself the space to breathe. Instead of rushing to find immediate solutions, I embrace the moment and engage in activities that nurture my spirit—such as meditation, exploring the beauty of nature, and pouring my thoughts onto paper.

I also take time to reflect on the blessings I’ve received and the obstacles I’ve overcome. This practice not only empowers me but also cultivates a deeper sense of compassion for myself. By acknowledging my journey, I find the strength to navigate difficult times in my job and face my fears with resilience. These moments of self-care and reflection remind me that even in the darkest times, there is a light within that guides me forward.
