Meet Shaneel Simpson

We recently connected with Shaneel Simpson and have shared our conversation below.

Shaneel, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism is deeply rooted in my experiences and the resilience I’ve had to build over the years. Growing up, I didn’t have an easy childhood. I often found myself trying to fit into circles and societies that weren’t meant for me, which took a toll on my self-confidence. But after high school, on my own, I began to discover my true self, thanks to the guidance of friends who became like life coaches to me.

The real turning point came during the five years I was a single mom to my daughter, Nyla, who was bravely battling stage 4 Wilms tumor cancer. Despite the immense challenges, I chose to focus on the positives, even when it felt like everything was falling apart. I realized that while it’s easy to be consumed by the negativity of life, it’s much more rewarding to choose peace and gratitude. This mindset has been my anchor, especially now as I navigate the evergreen grief of losing Nyla. My optimism comes from the belief that peace and gratitude are choices we make daily, and they serve not just me but my family, giving us the strength to keep moving forward, even in the face of unimaginable pain.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

My journey in the professional world began in 2010 when I dove into the realm of social media marketing, teaching myself the ins and outs of the digital landscape. Over the years, I expanded my expertise, eventually moving into digital marketing, where I honed my skills in account management and client experience. Today, my primary focus is on project management—a field I’ve grown passionate about due to its structured methodology and the ability to weave storytelling into every project. For me, project management isn’t just about completing tasks; it’s about taking clients, viewers, and fans on a journey that deeply connects them to the highlight piece, creating a lasting impact.

Currently, I’m progressing in my project management career and also channeling my energy into a new initiative that is very close to my heart. I’m launching a care group dedicated to supporting families who are courageously fighting alongside a child affected by cancer. This group aims to build a connected network of supportive teams across the Caribbean, offering everything from medical assistance to supplementary aid. My vision is to create a community where families feel empowered, supported, and never alone in their battle.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three qualities have been particularly impactful in my journey: resilience, adaptability, and empathy.

1. Resilience: Life has thrown me more than my fair share of challenges, but resilience has been my bedrock. The ability to bounce back from setbacks, to keep moving forward despite the odds, is something that has shaped my path profoundly. My advice to those early in their journey is to embrace challenges as opportunities to grow. Understand that resilience isn’t about never falling; it’s about getting back up every time you do.
2. Adaptability: The world of digital marketing and project management is constantly evolving, and being adaptable has allowed me to stay relevant and ahead of the curve. I’ve had to learn new skills, pivot my focus, and adapt to different roles and responsibilities throughout my career. For those just starting out, I recommend staying curious and open to change. Be willing to learn and unlearn as you go; flexibility is a strength that will serve you well.
3. Empathy: Finally, empathy has been crucial, especially in my work with clients and now in the care group I’m launching for families dealing with childhood cancer. Understanding others’ perspectives, needs, and emotions has helped me build strong relationships and create impactful work. My advice here is simple: practice active listening. The more you understand and connect with others, the better you’ll be at delivering solutions that truly resonate.

Developing these qualities takes time, but by staying committed to your growth and maintaining a positive outlook, you’ll find that they become integral parts of who you are.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

Absolutely, I am actively seeking to connect with individuals from various backgrounds and talents who are passionate about contributing to childhood cancer awareness. My goal is to bring hope and support to families affected by this devastating illness. Whether you’re a healthcare professional, counselor, artist, storyteller, or someone with a unique skill that could uplift and inspire these families, I would love to collaborate with you. Together, we can build a network that not only raises awareness but also provides tangible support to those in need.

Let’s join forces to make a meaningful impact and bring hope back into the lives of these courageous families.
